back to article Twitch ditches Safety Advisory Council, relaunches with vetted 'ambassadors'

Twitch has reportedly dismantled its Safety Advisory Council, and apparently plans to replace the panel with chosen "ambassadors." That council, formed in 2020 "to enhance Twitch's approach to issues of trust and safety," was made up of nine individuals: Four industry experts, and five Twitch partners and moderators.  But …

    Most unwise

Legislation is going to force them to rehire expertise at much higher rates than if they'd just kept them on.

Or they could pull out of the UK and EU markets, but that's where they make their revenue.

I would imagine that it is far more likely that the Board of Directors or internal Lawyers will find an in-house/cheaper solution that scrapes the inside limits of what is required.

Please explain the new panel's relevance to safety

'a group of select users who "positively contribute to the Twitch community - from being role models for their community, to establishing new content genres, to having inspirational stories that empower those around them" '

So a bunch of product enthusiasts with an essentially promotional remit will replace a panel set up to provide guidance on user safeguarding. Doesn't sound as if this is much of a like for like substitution, rather more just a crudely masked elimination of an annoying source of profit-adverse guidance.

    Subathons

The platform that financially encourages streamers to take part in marathon streaming sessions, including streaming while asleep, will now take advice on how healthy this is from the people who've earned the most doing that. Fortunately abused people can always judge their abusers objectively.

    They can't do worse.

The last were the ones famous for giving a 7 and 3? Maybe 5? day bans for full on sex on stream, and even less for being naked. Both if which were supposed to be permanent no coming back level bans.

So hey, maybe with actual users, there will be more fair treatment now and rules will actually be applied evenly.

Probably not but hey they literally can't be worse then the outgoing ones.

      Re: They can't do worse.

Was it them or was it executive meddling?

I'm not familiar with the service at all, but it reads to me like somebody at C-suite level might have interfered with what should have been a proper ban by pointing out something along the lines of "look how popular this person is" (read: look how much money they make us), so the "punishment" got downgraded to a mere slap on the wrist.

        Re: They can't do worse.

That is speculated to be exactly why it happened the way it did. Both cases saw huge jumps followers/subscribers for the offending party. So yeah likely just waved away. Just should have happened differently.

Sort of cond9nes bad behaviour because it gets attention, and now historically, there is precedent for fighting to allow it "as a mistake". So I don't see why anyone with no problems showing themselves wouldn't do it.

        Sad state of affairs.

But I sure it would not go down well for a gay man to get on there and do the same, the people who skated past the rules were both "traditionally attractive".

        Just another rules for thee...

      Re: They can't do worse.

As long as everyone involved in the sex is an adult, it should be a 0-second ban.

And you don't need a "council" to say "Nazis bad" which is really what they should be targeting, not sex or nudity.

Honestly, the whole concept of a "trust and safety council" is just stupid.

Uh huh... So a platf9rm open to people not of adult age, should be aloswed to show sex...

No wonder you went AC, thats just idiotic and I wouldn't want my name associated with the thought. Stuff like that get you labeled in the ranks of guys called James that fix thing savily.

    Twitch... more like shudder

"Twitch" wasn't on my radar until this article - I would have assumed it was a birdwatching (twitcher) site not a tiktok clone.

With every passing day I have more and more sympathy for Victor Meldrew "I don't believe it!!"

It is not a tiktok clone by any stretch and that, that was you take away is alarming.

It is a game streaming site primarily, where people play various video games and stream it live for people to watch. Though has been involved in some less than savoury happenings on it platform, hopefully soon to be remedied.

It is worrying so many people are wholly unaware of what it actually does yet have non idea what they are actually talking about and don't care to find out either.

You may as well have said hydrogen is exactly the same.as oxygen, or that a finch and a chicken are the same thing to use your fantastically off the mark assumption. That is the level of knowledge deficit being displayed here yet with the conviction of someone who acts like they has known about it forever.

It would indeed make one shudder.
