back to article Casino cyberattacks put a bullseye on Scattered Spider – and the FBI is closing in

The cyberattacks against Las Vegas casinos over the summer put a big target on the backs of prime suspects Scattered Spider, according to Mandiant CTO Charles Carmakal. The Google-owned security biz has been tracking the loosely knit crew - believed to be teens and twenty-somethings located in the US and UK - since 2022 when …

...when the casinos were still run by the mob. Those spiders would have found themselves very scattered. Inside various concrete blocks in public construction projects.

They're still run by the mob; it's just that today's mob is much higher up the food chain.

Any wonder why the FBI is aggressively targetting this group and not really worrying about the groups attacking healthcare and other industries?

Low-hanging fruit. These are more of the overconfident "script kiddies" type bragging in forums. The state backed professionals don't make mistakes as often. Also, the latter one will never be extradited anyway.

The missing Crypto is not the work of the Mob, that's just the nature of Crypto... It is there to be stolen, by the next miscreant in the chain...

Calling them script kiddies is a huge stretch. If they're the script kiddies, what do you call the security professionals that shamelessly use scripts and programs they didn't create to automate the vast majority of what they do (even the white hat hackers)? The script kiddie moniker has been evolved into a professional way to insult criminals simply because "they're bad". Let's not forget why Cybersecurity is a thing: because of black and grey hats that forced companies to care about their security.

script kiddies are short term attackers to get hooker or drugs. Security professionals are in for the long game to protect (your money in your bank, your health care info, your cars auto start). And we don't look over our back for cops, or mob hitmen - ever. Script kiddies, everyone wants to burn one or two on a stick.

My understanding is concrete wasn't used for problems in the western casinos. More typically a thorough beating and left naked in the middle of the desert. Much more sporting.
