back to article America's enemies targeting US critical infrastructure should be 'wake-up call'

Digital intruders from China, Russia, and Iran breaking into US water systems this year should be a "wake-up call," according to former National Security Agency cyber boss Rob Joyce. "None of that was significantly consequential," Joyce explained during the NSA's annual State of the Hack panel at RSA Conference on Wednesday. …

    America? Wake up call?

Are we talking about the same country? America never wakes up from its fantasy world.

Hey, boss! There's this incredible gadget out there that will let us connect all of our business critical, confidential and proprietary data into one storage container. And it's perfectly safe! Plus, it's FREE!!

    Did you say free?

    Yep. Free as a bird.

    How secure is it?

It's perfectly safe. No one could ever break in.

(There's a reason it's called "the 'net" and "the cloud". Two things that are just a bunch of holes held together with string/vapor. Oh, for the good old, secure days of dedicated lines.)

    Snooze alarm!

This wake up call was over 30 years ago! President Reagan saw the dangers after seeing the movie War Games in 1983, spending years and millions trying to get infrastructure, Government and Military to toughen security. This was still in the days of ARPANET before anything like the Internet we know today. Now we've added IoT, A.I and lots of remote automation, making it even easier to gain access to these systems. After 9/11 the NSA went on a hacking spree, backdooring and tapping into infrastructure (phone switches, PCs, routers, PLCs...etc.), networks and companies inside and outside the U.S.

Teenagers have successfully hacked into water, sewer and phone systems, even Government and Military. China has been hacking and stealing information from the U.S for years, hardly news! We are long past a wake up call, the war is well underway so start fighting!!!!

      > so start fighting

But, but, TikTok fun. But, but, freedom of speech. But, but "we also do it".

"the NSA went on a hacking spree, backdooring and tapping into infrastructure (phone switches, PCs, routers, PLCs...etc.), networks and companies inside and outside the U.S." Or so you claim, without any evidence.

    Root issues to be fixed

The problems mentioned are impossible to resolve unless root problems are fixed:

    1. Ban ransom payments.

    2. Throttle traffic by default. Or throttle progressively (the larger the volume, the slower).

    3. Throttle domain registration and do proper verification by snail mail.

    4. Filter out young domains, once registered, on browser, OS, app level, and large e-mail providers. For example, all messages with young URLs should become un-clickable (copy paste if you are really sure).

    5. Use static traceable owner specific IPv6 addresses and throttle/filter as domains.

    ... (add your ideas)

Yeah right they have got right on doing something about it. These clowns have been making the same statements for years and they do not one single damn thing to solve the problems. And will not even after the pipeline debacle of a few years ago should have set off alarms for one their generally useless "war on some damn thing" them stupid yanks are good at declaring but not making any progress with. Surely there must be some graft to be had and corrupt politicians to be greased to get the money train flowing to the parasite corporations they are so good at doing with those ideas.

    As has been said repeatedly...

The solution is very simple, but also inconvenient.

Get this stuff off the Internet. You need dedicated isolated lines, or bodies on site, or a combination of both.
