back to article Cops finally unmask 'LockBit kingpin' after two-month tease

Police have finally named who they firmly believe is the kingpin of the LockBit ransomware ring: Dmitry Yuryevich Khoroshev. Khoroshev's unmasking and addition to Western sanctions lists represents a landmark revelation in the cops' efforts to disrupt and dismantle the LockBit operation, the bulk of which action was carried …

For $10million there's every prospect of him drinking in a bar in Moscow and waking up in Poland or some other country convenient to the US.

Not enough, $10million is nowhere near enough to do something so risky.

Try it and get it wrong and at best your in a hole with a hole in your head, worse could be they do not shot you first.

Given the amount of money he has squirreled away, those two big guys sitting at the table behind him are likely to be his bodyguards.

It would be a real shame if a Ukrainian drone managed to bypass Russian air defenses and whack this guy. A real shame, I tell you.

I'm amused that your comment has attracted (at time of writing) 3 downvoters. Guess our vatnik/orc chums here must have taken a break from rubbing oil in a totally-not-homoerotic way into Putin's pecs for long enough to log in and downvote you. Bless them.

He's only 31. It won't be Tsar Putin's land forever and there's a reasonable chance post-Putin Russia won't remain estranged from the West. Might be hard to see him ever extradited (as it's against Russia's constitution) but if I were him I'd still be a bit nervous about remaining untouchable through 40-50 years of unpredictable Russian foreign policy playing out.

yes but. A new name, a new passport and he's on the beach and laughing. With enough money, one can live well just about anywhere so he will never need to leave Russia if he gauges the political winds correctly and jumps before there's a policy change and officialdom comes looking to take him away. Assuming he chooses targets outside of Russia.

Just about anywhere. Russia for large parts of the 20th century was one of the worst places to attempt it.

Unless you amass enough power or influence to be a potential threat to Putin, regardless of your loyalty up to that point, and he has you killed anyway.

Or simply because he's paranoid that's the case.

Or because he wants an excuse to grab your money.

    One can hope

With renewed aid from the US and Europe continuing to increase theirs, that he's on a future list of draftees to be ground up in Putin's folly. He has enough money to bribe his way out of that for now, but at some point Putin will become desperate enough for cash he'll realize it is more efficient to send people like him to die and confiscate their wealth to fund his war machine.

Even better, hopefully he tries to defect when he's shipped to Ukraine. Either he'll be shot in the back by Russian soldiers when he tries to run, or he gets captured by Ukrainian soldiers who turn him over to Polish authorities as recently happened for another Russian "defector" on the wanted list in the west.

      Re: One can hope

unfortunately he'll never end up in a trench in Ukraine, unless as punishement / falls out of favour, and with that amount of money he can still buy his way out at any point, right up to the trench. There are up to 10M Russians who can be - potentially - mobilised, huge majority with no money (but debt) and no wits, while he has both. Unfortunately, I don't see him being inserted into the front of the line.

And yes, I blame us, in the West, for looking away for years when Big Money from the East flew westward, and smart (and corrupt) people in Russia bought foreign citizenship(s) as ultimate insurance.

    Unimpressed.

It's more likely Putin will pin a medal on him and hire him to run Russian cyber ops. If they knew who he was they should have tried to frame him for attacks on Russian infrastructure. Then Putin's lot would have gone after him, and justice would have been done. We need more competent people in charge.

His ill-gotten gains are likely to be of interest to other parties who prefer to remain under the radar. It may be helpful to them that his identity and location have been provided.

How do you know that this isn't the case already? Ie that this person works of Russian secret services?

In fact, how do we know that it's not US agencies pretending to be Russians?

How do we know that any parts of this story are real? The first casualty of war is the truth, as they say.
