back to article Oracle's database family gets trendy AI makeover

Oracle has celebrated the general availability of its latest database upgrade by renaming it. Out is the "c" lineage that started with the Oracle 12 database in 2013, in is "ai" as the 23c database teased in September last year gets a makeover for the tech trend of the moment. Big Red announced the new name along with the …

Hm, two years to transition away from Oracle and moving to Postgres. That shouldn't be too bad a time line. BirmingOracleham should not become Sapham but transition directly to Postgresham. Savings can be achieved so easily... why not start now?

    Trust

I wonder how much trust is required in order to blindly accept whatever it is that this AI inclusion is capable of.

    Being a cynic...

Stuff "AI" on the end of anything and marketing can double its price.

    In Japan...

...Ai is a common (usually woman's) name. Also used in China. Hitachi is a Japanese family name/surname. As Japanese family names come first, there are probably some folk out there called Hitachi Ai. Also some folk called Toyota [orToyoda] Ai.

Then again how fucking stupid do you have to be, to believe because someone has AI in the name it must be magical ?

In Spanish, "ay" (pronounced the same as "ai") is an exclamation of pain, like "ouch" in English. So Oracle's marketing is truthful for once.

Just when 30 years of performance nightmares had already convinced you Oracle was a bloated warthog ill-suited to production loads, they slow it down even further. :)

They did this exact same thing 25 years ago

When the dotcom boom was about to go crazy, they renamed Oracle 8 to Oracle 8i, i of course meaning internet. It was still basically just a relational database, but it had a tiny bit of internetty stuff in it. Of course this helped them sell it to loads of executives eager to get on the bandwagon, whether they needed it or not. And I guess it'll fool many people the same way this time round too.

No they sold load sto executives because they oracle gave away parties with hookers and more to those executives.

    IBM got there first ;-)

IBM beat everyone with its flavour of Unix (AIX) for the venerable 6150 and Power processors - finally the dodgy AIX backronym can be rebranded (and nobody loves a rebrand of old hat tech more than IBM) more meaningfully from Advanced Interactive eExecutive to Artificial Intelligence eXecutive.
