back to article Irish government hands Intel millions to offset energy price hikes

Intel was awarded €30 million ($32.2 million) by Ireland last year as part of a state aid package for companies affected by energy price increases. The Santa Clara chipmaker is pumping billions into new semiconductor manufacturing facilities around the world, but it seems the company isn't averse to picking up a bit of change …

The UK does it all the time, remember “the special relationship”…. You don’t hear much about it because, behind closed doors, need to know and stiff upper lip is the British way…

I wonder whether this money came from the Apple €13bn or individual Irish tax payers…

No, that's hidden away under escrow invested in bonds which have lost 2% of their value - so that 13B is down 250M instead of putting it in the S&P 500 the last few years.

How much went into the Irish economy?

"Intel has had a presence in Ireland for over 30 years and claims to have invested more than €30 billion ($32.2 billion) during that time."

That's a lovely number. But I wonder what proportion of it went to the Netherlands buying in fab plant? And how much of the sales went via Luxembourg?

Investing €30B is not land acquisition and assembling the buildings or even staff salaries. I'll bet the vast majority went to ASML and all the other suppliers who are not in Ireland. The money went through Ireland, but most barely had time to do some sight-seeing before moving on.

Meanwhile the public had to fight for it

If a company such as Itel cannot read the news like everyone else and see the escalating tensions and potential for business disruption, then set aside money for the pote trial that they need it, they should j9t be get a hand out to bail them out of it.

I could see it coming, we were told it was coming, we all knew it was happening and they did nothing to prepare.

That money would have been better used for any number of life improving things other than pay off a multi billion dollar mega corp so they keep coming to your dinner parties.
