back to article Japan's space junk cleaner prototype closes in on its target

Japan's effort to start a business disposing of space junk is off to a promising start, after the ADRAS-J satellite spotted its first target and sent back images. Launched in February 2024, ADRAS-J was sent to find an old HII-A rocket body that was used to launch the GOSAT Earth observation satellite and then left in orbit. …

WTAF are you talking about? Debris removal is the whole point of the project. This was a pathfinder to see if they could actually get close to it in one piece without wasting fuel or crashing into it.

The next missions are to actually grab something and pull it into a low perigee orbit.

Pretty sure the author jokingly meant no jobs for _humans_.

    Steptoe and Son*?

When it comes to the debris left in orbit, I wonder whether de-orbiting material that cost so much to put there is the best use of the resource. Defunct space hardware might be better collected into an orbiting scrap yard to await recycling when orbital foundries and workshops are established.

In future, if this were a viable model, hardware that would be normally discarded after its primary use, might be designed to optimise its secondary reuse or recycling in orbit.

Very early in the space age, I think A C Clarke suggested that rocket's discarded fuel tanks could be reused to assemble a space station but the idea might have appeared even earlier in some of the publications of the British Interplanetary Society.

    I miss my Huawei phone

As does my wife. She's cursing her brand new, near top of the line Samsung as I write this.

America's vendetta against Huawei is stupid and performative, whether having their CEO arrested by Canada customs, or forcing a really good product off the shelves.

Now, in Canada, you need to hunt far and wide to find a smartphone that isn't Samsung or Apple

Still hanging on to my excellent Mate 20 Pro.

I'll replace it when it so much as skips a beat, or when a better shinier thing grabs my attention, but that day doesn't seem to be approaching (not yet, anyway).

Sure there's the risk of (Google) stealing my data. But that same risk will be there on whatever I get next.

Just as well. Trying to figure out what day your rocket is due to be de-orbited around the christmas period would be a nightmare to try and figure out. Probably best just to leave your rocket in orbit for the whole festive period and hope it isn't kicked over by merry miscreants on their way home from the pub.

Just stick a for sale sign on it. $5 or equivalent in local currency. It'll be gone by the morning - for free.

Maybe it is only me, but I often come to Register for comments. And not every news needs a long analysis.

I propose not to merge short news into one article, but instead follow the Reddit principle. In my opinion it is OK to post short news articles instead. They would make it easier to comment, but also scan the news by titles. I would also prefer a few more short but unique news (those unpublished by other sites) and read interesting comments.

    Like it ..

Huawei on rise, with bunch of over the top innovations & new features. Nano glass, NearLink, Satellite call/sms/pic, 5.5G ready, NoCode payment, Ai retushing pics, Hyper Threading SMT, etc.

Like it a lot cos they are worth it by any mean, they fight with a style & they are a real winner in all of this.

A kidnapping a daughter of your opponent, cos you're losing a G tech race (& wanna take it), is a bottom of all bottoms, an eternal shame !
