AI in the age of trial by social media
Just at the point where society has elevated the utterance of hurty words to the gravest form of crime imaginable, the ability for almost anyone to create deepfakes emerges.
How wonderful!
Baltimore police have arrested Dazhon Leslie Darien, the former athletic director of Pikesville High School (PHS), for allegedly impersonating the school's principal using AI software to make it seem as if he made racist and antisemitic remarks. Darien, of Baltimore, Maryland, was subsequently charged with witness retaliation …
FTFA: Thereafter, another staff member – who "had a difficult time working under [Eiswert's] leadership for various reasons" – disclosed that she forwarded the email to a PHS student's cellphone, who she knew would rapidly spread the message around various social media outlets and throughout the school.
Nail her hide to the proverbial barn door as well. What sort of malignant moron comes across content like this, and has as her first thought, "I won't bother doing anything to verify that this is true, it's damaging to someone I don't like so it MUST be true - I'll just spread it as far and wide as possible" ?
I give you an upvote but did you expect the student to try and fact check it?
As for the staff member she "had a difficult time working under [Eiswert's] leadership, she fell for it. Anyone she sent it to are you going to nail them up to if they also shared it?
"Anyone she sent it to are you going to nail them up to if they also shared it?"
Yes.
If you share or publish defamatory material you are liable to some degree. You have the responsibility of firstly determining the veracity of the material or allegations, secondly whether publication serves some public interest and finally whether there are processes or protocols for properly dealing with the material - judicial, quasi-judicial, institutional etc.
This long predates the advent of electricity let alone computers.
These thoughtless, self absorbed imbeciles that infest this world are responsible for far more harm than those who merely initiate the harm.
I would have thought the decent and civil course would have been to confront the principal with this material giving that unfortunate individual the opportunity to defend himself.
The second party in the video when subsequently questioned would have thrown sufficient doubt on the material for the authorities to be involved before causing any serious harm.
"What sort of malignant moron comes across content like this, and has as her first thought, "I won't bother doing anything to verify that this is true, it's damaging to someone I don't like so it MUST be true - "
sadly, at least half of everyone on any social media platform.......
It would seem that intelligence is not his strong suit. You want to flee by plane and you bring a gun with you ? Way to go to pass unnoticed.
From the article, it seems obvious that this idiot was bungling his job, getting rightfully chewed out for it and, of course, decided to retaliate instead of cleaning up his act.
What made him decide to run for it is not clear, but getting caught simply because you improperly stashed a firearm speaks volumes about his lack of anything resembling the notion of risk vs reward.
I thought it was Criminal 101: "Only Commit One Crime At A Time".
Trying to flee from a stalking/malicious-communication rap on a plane while carrying an illegal gun is on a par with those eejits who get stopped for speeding or tailgating on the highway, only for it to be then discovered that they're mules, running kilos of drugs from Mexico into the US...
Was he on the run? The article just said he was boarding a flight and was stopped because his firearm was improperly packed (whatever that means). I'm assuming this could be perfectly innocent activity in the US and when security stopped him about the firearm, they did the background check as a matter of routine, then discovered the outstanding arrest warrant.
I'm surprised the arrest warrant didn't crop up otherwise at the time of booking, checking in etc.
I've never heard of a transport company doing background checks. Government issued no fly list are sent to transport companies.
Imagin calling an Uber, getting denied due to someone with the same name in another part of the world has a warrant. I can't either.
Very quickly nobody named Mohammad would be allowed on public transportation, and that's not fair.
A government agency, the Transportation Security Administration, is responsible for security at airports. They're the ones who would have detected the improperly-packed firearm (basically, it's illegal to carry a firearm in carry-on baggage under any circumstances, firearms can be carried in checked baggage as long as they're unloaded and properly labeled and the airline and TSA is notified) and performed the follow-up actions.
Yeah, basically they don't want people carrying firearms on board a plane in the cabin for the obvious reasons. Unloaded firearms can be carried in the baggage hold, since they're not accessible to passengers and the only concern is the fire/accidental discharge threat that they would be if loaded.
