back to article Oracle changes its tune with HQ move to Music City

Oracle co-founder and CTO Larry Ellison has confirmed that the tech giant plans to move its global headquarters to Nashville, Tennessee. The dominant database company has already announced an $1.2 billion investment in a new campus in the home of country music, creating 8,500 new jobs. In an interview with former Senate …

    That famous Ellison charm

"We want to be a part of a community where our people want to live, and Nashville is a fabulous place to live. It's a great place to raise a family, it's got a unique and fantastic vibrant culture."

...adding, "Ha ha, suck it, Austin!"

Sure Larry, was that why you moved Oracle to Texas in the first place, then?

  3. WUStLBear82

Nashville isn't as bad as Memphis, but you couldn't pay me enough to live in Tennessee vs. Austin. But Gov. Abbott gloated so much when Oracle moved to Texas without even getting taxpayer-funded incentives; does this mean Tennessee is more "pro-business" than Texas? Such delicious schadenfreude.

Sure thing Larry. Did you ask them? Did they make that decision? Or did you make it for them?

I somehow doubt Californian tofu-munchers will be keen to live amongst the bible belt's trailer park trash.

Presumably most of the people at Oracle HQ in California are already living in the communities where they want to live.

Plus the limited availability of health care, especially for women, in a place where state law considers women to be expendable property and most of the legislature believes in faith healing. Public education is also crippled by extremism. But single white men, especially incels, may find it to be a decent home.

And the state legislature is on the verge of passing a bill to allow school teachers and admins to carry concealed guns as a way to prevent school shootings. Yeah...*that's* going to be popular with families with kids...

        Well, that's an ignorant take.

They upset you, but you don't deny or disagree with any of the specific issues they raised?

Health care availability is the same for both genders in Nashville, as it is anywhere else. State law does not consider women to be property. The city is home to Vanderbilt University, the most selective research institution in the USA. Public education is garbage, as it is in all large cities.

            Anything else?

If you'd bothered to read the third paragraph you'd know they're moving from Texas, not California, and wouldn't look so stupid.

      Or maybe you still would.

Is true, HQ is moving, but no doubt most staff in TX will be left there, as are most in CA, and TN will have a few relocated manglers and a lot of new local staff. Many with the great education offered in southern states -- recall that the Scopes trial was in TN and most there still think he was guilty.

I'd be interested to know who is actually moving. Given that Oracle already moved once in 2020, who is going to be excited about moving a second time? Or did the staff who "moved" stay put during the height of COVID? Anyone who was already willing to move to Texas probably won't mind moving to Tennessee, while anyone who didn't want to move the first time probably won't want to move this time.

"along the East Bank of the Cumberland River"

Let's ask the Gaylord Opryland resort and convention center how well that turned out when the river flooded. Or was it the Opry Mills outlet mall? Either way, hope big red O buys some good insurance.

Yeah, I was there for that. *That* was a very bad week. I remember the smell of the mud the most—it was absolutely putrid, and after a month, it hadn't really gone away.

    Will Larry stay in Hawaii?

Nashville might be great for the peasants, but the sailing opportunities are somewhat limited.

As it happens, a friend did sail in the days when he attended the University of Texas. But I don't think that Austin produces a lot of crews for America's Cup yachts.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nashville is regretting this "move" once Evil Larry & Co have really settled in....
