back to article Hyundai picks Palantir to help it build automated navy ships

South Korean industrial giant HD Hyundai's maritime arm announced on Sunday it will collaborate with controversial software developer Palantir Technologies to develop an unmanned surface vessel (USV) that can conduct reconnaissance for the world's navies. Further work on combat drone boats will come later, according to HD …

Does this imply shooting at anything that the robot calculates might be a threat? Such as a passing fishing boat?

It may look like a fishing boat, but we need to be vigilant and can not let any potential threat go unchecked. As everyone knows collateral damage is an inevitable part of war and this system should enable us to eliminate that threat with maximum firepower.

And finally, before I finish I would just like to say please think of the children before criticising the system.

But what if it's a phishing boat?

      Ladies and gentlemen.

I present unto you the standard Russian (was Soviet) fishing trawler. Packed with all the latest covert spy equipment and (I wouldn't be surprised) armed to the teeth with rather more than a wet haddock.

      Cristoph,

Nope. Because this project is an intelligence gathering craft.

However this wouldn't be new technology anyway. 50 year-old anti-ship missiles were capable of selecting their own targets. Admittedly their selection criteria was pretty much limited to hitting the biggest radar target that their seeker could find - but nonetheless that was autonomous targetting. The Exorcet missile that hit Atlantic Conveyor in the Falkands war was aimed at either one of the carriers or one of the escorts (can't remember, it's ages since I read about it) - was decoyed by chaff and then simply aimed for the next ship it saw.

When you drop a bomb, it's specifically addressed - because gravity means it's going roughly in one direction with some bombs being able to steer a bit.

Anti-ship missiles are more, "to whom it may concern"...

Actually modern ones are rather more precise and lots of missiles now have target databases with picutures to tell them what to aim for.

But what if the AI sees torpedo boats?

    Thumb Up

    Oh Yeah,

I wonder if Rishi is planning on giving the job of stopping the boats to Palantir ?

That would make sense of UK/Microsoft 365 data sharing ambitions as it would allow the go vermins to pass any blame for the emerging cockups onto some shonky database tech which, OBVIOUSLY has been hacked by the Isreali's, the Russians, the Chinese, The Americans, etc....
