back to article IT biz trials gadget deliveries by drone to sidestep traffic and emissions

A UK IT maintenance outfit is testing out drones to deliver equipment to customers, claiming this will help with sustainability measures of all things. Based in Berkshire, the English county that lies to the west of Greater London, Smart CT is currently trialing drone deliveries, with initial test runs limited to one nearby …

    Pure greenwashing

There are so many reasons why this won't work, I can't be bothered to list them all.

Either they are just trying to look green, or someone in the company thinks it's cool to play with drones.

I won't believe it until I can get a bacon sarnie delivered by drone. (and you can fill in the punchline)

Bacon sarnies may be challenging, but I would think that precision guided burrito delivery would not be that hard. Just strap a plastic bomb tube on the burrito and put it on a simple ballistic trajectory, and a drone should be able to put it right through the customer's bedroom window. I imagine a similar effect could be achieved with submarine sandwiches and shawarma wraps, but it's hard to beat the density of a burrito for staying on course.

I think there were siblings who tried that business model, trading as the Flying Burrito Brothers... but I heard they got band.

"What am I supposed to do with that?"

"Oh, don't worry - it's on the house!"

    gadget deliveries by drone

What happens though if the gadget I'm buying is a drone? Does the drone get delivered by another drone, or can it deliver itself?

I can see a future in falconry.

Ipads, $1000 iphones and other high value items probably worth training your peregrine or goshawk to snatch these drones from the sky. :)

My luck they would all be carting recreational drugs whose vendors aren't known for their understanding.

But can it open a wheelie bin lid to complete the delivery.

    Drone delivery services

I'm waiting for the point where Uber/Lyft get into the Drone Delivery Services Business, and of course, to hype up their stock values, decide that its only gonna work when run by *cough* AI assisted automation.

At that point I'm gonna have to find myself the bits to put together a decent microwave laser. Which, of course, will require *cough* AI tuning.
