back to article Samsung enterprise SSD prices skyrocket thanks to AI's appetite for storage

Samsung intended to raise prices on its enterprise SSDs by 15 percent in the second calendar quarter of 2024, but unrelentingly high demand boosted by AI might push that higher still. SSDs have been getting more expensive since late last year, so it's nothing new to see bigger price tags as this year drags on. However, the …

    I call bullshit

I paid £306 for an 8TB Samsung 870 SSD just 4 months ago.

The same drive is now £480

The 4TB I bought for another system about 12-15 months ago was £170, it's now £220

Those are just the cheap ones, most 4TB drives are more like £300 now.

    Labelling

Of course anything labelled as for Enterprise will be a highr price.

It is the same with the leisure industry. A TV priced at £xxx, if labelled for leisure use (caravanning/RVing) would cost £xxx+%. I call it gouging.

    Azure/AWS/Google disk drives?

I wonder when the cloud majors do to disk drives what they did to system builders and start producing their own disks in-house…

In either case expect cloud subscriptions to also increase, by a similar amount?

    Of course...

... I've been staring at the SMART data on one of my oldest SSDs with increasingly furrowed brow for a while now. I expect it to die when prices reach their peak - and crash afterwards.

For those of you holding out, I will announce it so you can start planning for lower prices!
