Ludicrous, as if there's nothing fascistic about data profiling tech!
Palantir boss says outfit's software the only reason the 'goose step' has not returned to Europe
The CEO of controversial data-mining firm Palantir has claimed its technology has prevented terrorist attacks in Europe, thereby implicitly saving the continent from the return of fascism. The fast-talking Alex Karp took to the stage at the FII Institute conference in Miami last week to tell the audience how proud he was that …

On a tour of the Dachau camp site, our guide explained why the old SS barracks are now used to run training seminars for the Bavarian riot police (so they can be reminded of what can happen in a totalitarian state). Maybe, just maybe, the Germans have some influence over preventing the rise of fascism.

There is no ruling party in germany. Its chaos for years now, worthy of Italy.
"They" [who intend to ban] are "all the others", and it takes them years and years of discussion and consultation of the hightest courts. All the wile said "political party" continues to provoke with outright nazi jargon, xenophobia, antisemitism, holocaust denial (illegal in Germany. Because of reasons) and barely hidden agenda to abolish democracy, as soon as in power.
I can view them across a border, but *that* "politcal party" won't stop at borders. Don't feel safe behind my fence in the zoo.

**** The people you are thinking about were far left, not right.
**** The USA is not a democracy.
You're half right... the US is more correctly classified as a "democratic republic" or "representative democracy".
As for the other half... the NSDAP (about as Socialist as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is Democratic or a Republic) is widely considered to have been far right. The insistence of an AC isn't going to change that fact.
Cheers!

Is this the 'better life' where they pay thousands to people traffickers and run the risk of death/rape pretty much every step of the way and then when they reach their destination are abandoned to live as an underclass out of sight of law and such niceties as minimum pay, working hours limits, heath and safety? Doesn't sound much better than the slave trade of old.
I saw a story that some of the people found dead in a shipping container were actually degree educated and worked relatively high profile jobs in their home country. They could have spent the money on legal migration instead and would have not died.

You'd be surprised. Work visas have to be sponsored by your job which means it has to be both a job that's eligible for visa sponsorship and worth the company's while navigating the byzantine sponsorship rules. You also need a job offer before you can get the visa.
I know a woman with 3 master's degrees in different domains (science and humanities) which she studied in her 2nd and 3rd languages (English being the 3rd) currently working for the NHS in a visa eligible job who can't get her visa extended cos NHS management will only sponsor clinical roles...

Re: They could have spent the money on legal migration instead and would have not died.
This 'they should have spent the money on legal immigration' line always makes me laugh. It shows how utterly ignorant most people are of how difficult and expensive the UK (and most other western countries') immigration system really is.
When I got married to a non-UK native, all of my family were shocked that she wasn't just allowed to live here. They were gobsmacked at the five year process that cost over £14k, with the constant threat of her being sent home if we didn't dot every i and cross every t to perfection during those five years. That was 10 years ago now. Looking at the way the prices have gone up, it must be well over £25k these days. The FLR and IFR visas are almost double what we paid at around £3k (you'll need four+ of these dependant on the immigration route), and that's excluding additional fees like the Healthcare Surcharge charge (£1,035 per year). Note these fees are per person, not for a family.
And if you are not the spouse of a UK citizen and have no work place to sponsor you, then you're gonna need tens of thousands of pounds in the bank as collateral and the entire process is going to take 5 to 10 years and cost a further tens of thousands of pounds. And note, you can't just use the money in the bank to pay for the visas as you must have said collateral available each time you renew your visa (every 2.5 years). As soon as the cash in the bank drops below the required level, your visa will be denied.
So yeah, that family that have sold absolutely everything they've ever owned to scrape together £1k to pay people traffickers should definitely have used the money to pay for legal immigration. It wouldn't even cover the first meeting with an immigration specialist.

Re: They could have spent the money on legal migration instead and would have not died.
My OH is a foreign national and here on ILR (the old 2 year system thankfully) so I know EXACTLY how complex the system is. However this is a symptom of the two tier immigration forced on the UK by the EU and still not fixed after the shambles that brexit has become.
While we were members of the EU we could not restrict migration from the other EU nations so the only way to 'reduce' immigration was to make RoW much harder. It was an epically stupid thing for the govt to do as it has made it infinitely harder for people with skills we need to come to the UK.
But as I said before, if you come to the UK/US/wherever illegally you are unlikely to go to the authorities if bad things happen to you and as such you are a prime candidate for abuse and exploitation.

Re: They could have spent the money on legal migration instead and would have not died.
Annoyingly, we missed the 2 year route by less than a year if I remember rightly.
The newer five and ten year routes are far more complex though. There were a tonne of new requirement added, like income thresholds, 'Life in the UK' exam, healthcare supplements and several English tests, among a myriad of other little bureaucratic tweaks. When we started our route, there was a lot of fuss about how much more complex it had become. Even phoning the immigration helpline was no help at all. No one wanted to take any responsibility for giving advice and their stock answer was "you need to provide whatever it asks for in the question". As I am freelance, I needed to provide accounts. They insisted that you have accounts drawn up by a qualified accountant with a professional accreditation, but didn't say which accreditations they accepted. There were horror stories online of applications being refused for the accountant having the wrong accreditation. So I called to ask which were accepted and they just said "whatever is asked for in the question". Useless.
The English tests were a joke. My wife is a qualified English teacher and she still had to take them. The questions were of the level "can you point to five on this list of numbers?". The English exam cost hundred of pounds and was valid for two years. The Visas were valid for 2.5 years, so it was all designed to ensure you needed a new one for every visa (because when you're living in the UK, you're definitely going to forget how to speak English). You also had to show progress with your English, so each time you had to take a more advanced exam, which was obviously more expensive each time. It was ridiculous considering my wife has advanced qualifications in English, but they'd only accept the Micky Mouse ones that they wrote especially for the visa route. It's a scam.
The worst bit was that if you failed a visa application, even if you just forgot to provide a document, they could send her home. If you appealed and they accepted that appeal, they would move you onto the 10 year route (basically a punishment). If they didn't accept the appeal, tough. Thankfully we got through OK and always provided an excess of documents to them.

Income threshold, life in the UK test and English tests were part of the 2 year. Certainly previously you didn't need the English test if you come from a country where the main language is English. Now it seems like they have to tick the boxes and if they don't then computer says no. Not long and we will be exporting civil servants to Vogsphere as they would do a better job than the locals.
We enlisted a local immigration lawyer who was very good and ended up only needing 30 mins to give our paperwork the thumbs up.
It is truly stupid cos before Brexit if you were a citizen of another EU member you could move here and get a job without basic English skills or knowing what sport Jenson Button was associated with. It is a scam and Davey Cameron should be behind bars for the harm he has done to the UK.

The tories have made it as near to impossible for anyone to make their way to the UK legally as any kind of refugee. They created this mess and as usual refuse to accept responsibility... it's all the refugees fault, their evil and their little boats are a threat to everyone else life.
Or as I like to say these days.
Conservatism is the irrational and illogical fear that somewhere, somehow, somebody a conservative feels is inferior to them... is being treated equally.

You're not really a refugee after travelling through multiple safe countries. These people are not seeking asylum from persecution in France. There are enough NGOs to help them apply through the proper channels once they've landed in Europe. You seem unable to comprehend that the 'better life' that awaits most illegal immigrants is a life under the radar and away from the protections of society.
Certainly a very high number on the US southern border are economic migrants.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-62002300
This is not a story of people seeking asylum. They are not fleeing persecution or war. They thought they could beat the system and rather than being disappointed and not getting a visa they died a horrific death in a shipping container. Did these poor kids think that they would show up in the US and go to job interviews just like a US citizen?

Cartels and $60,000 fees - the people profiting from border crossings
Current and former law enforcement sources in Mexico and the US told me that even the most basic packages - which one Mexican source described to me as a “let’s see if we can get there” trip - would cost between $5,000 (£3,950) and $8,000 (£6,300) for a family of four starting in Mexico.
Other sources estimated that prices are now around $15,000 (£11,900) to as high as $60,000 (£47,400) for migrants coming from outside of Latin America
Makes the govt visa fees look almost sensible!

Palantir, Cambridge Analytica, and AggregateIQ were all implicated in the coordinated manipulation of public opinion in the run up to the Brexit Referendum. I am not talking about open persuasion, rather the sub-conscious manipulation of the general public in devious and underhanded ways that Adolf and Uncle Joe would have cum in their pants just thinking about. They continue in that same vein to this day backing the extreme right and "big money" at the expense of 99% of the human race in just about every election going. "innumerable terror attacks"
He says that hoping that you will interpret it as they stopped so many attacks that it was impossible to count.
Taken more literally it means in that you can't count them because there aren't any incidents to count. The contents of the folder holding the attacks their software and detected is the null set. Much like the person he says he has been dating that lives in another town, the Easter bunny, and a fair no-bid contract.

How does he know?
Is he claiming to have non-public information about the state of affairs in European intelligence?
If no, then his words have no merit.
If yes, then I imagine European Intelligence agencies can't be too happy with him both:
a) giving potential terrorists any information about how they might be stopped
b) telling the public that a private CEO has access to detailed non-public information, which I can't see any need for him to know

A good start would be to stop medicating people as a 'quick fix' and to stop the current 'treatment' of mental health issues with affirming 'care'.
The next step would be to actually use the judicial system to lock up criminals rather than letting them off with barely a slap on the wrist.

And crime in El Salvador is coming down rather nicely.
So what is the solution to criminals being criminal? If there is no punishment for breaking the law what reason does anyone have for obeying it?
This can be seen in various US cities where theft has been effectively decriminalised and people just walk out of stores with whatever they want.

Yawn. Another AC making a poor attempt at trolling.
Not enough people with mental illnesses are being detected and treated.
Not enough people with detected mental illnesses are being treated.
Not enough is done to prevent people with detected mental health issues from possessing guns.
The EU's population is broadly comparable to the US, and I don't believe the EU has had 5,000 gun deaths (or gun and knife deaths) in the first six weeks of 2024.

The VAST majority of gun deaths in the US are actually suicides, followed by mass shootings (which are *not* performed by gangs, but by people who are questionably mentally ill)

Re: Clean your own house first
Most 'mass shootings' are gang related. The recent KC 'mass shooting' was just that. 2 'kids' both with illegal guns. Adding more laws would not have stopped them. The flow of guns over the southern border ensures a good supply.
A surprising number of school shooters were undergoing treatment for MH issues. We're in a situation where we want a quick fix so throw pills at such problems and these can make things 10x worse. It is easy for the doc, they get a kickback from big phrama to push the latest batch of happy pills, you're not taking up their time any more and you get a huge bill and sink further down the spiral of despair.

Unprovable
His remarks are unprovable and therefore completely moot.
Terrorist attacks may have led to right-wing government is more European countries, but that's not equivalent to the reconstitution of Nazi Germany and the repeat of the Holocaust. The world has changed. Israel is now the home of the Jewish people and it (supposedly) possesses nuclear weapons. Even if the brown-shirts were to return Israel would stay safe.
I personally believe we should define clear borders for surveillance and snooping in our society. Politicians will always claim we need more to "keep us and our children safe" but their motives are repression and identifying people who could stir up trouble and unrest.
