back to article Pro-China campaign targeted YouTube with AI avatars

Think tank Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) last week published details of a campaign that spreads English language pro-China and anti-US narratives on YouTube. The campaign, which ASPI calls Shadow Play, includes 30 YouTube channels that have collectively published over 4,500 videos, accumulating 120 million views …

'China is highly capable and trusted to deliver massive infrastructure projects'

Honestly they got a point. When I'm looking for reliable massive infrastructure contractors it's them or Ancient Egypt. Nobody else comes close. That cheap Roman crap looks nice but crumbles after a few centuries

A lot of Roman concrete and roads are still in good shape two millennia on. The stuff that crumbled like the Colosseum wasn't because of poor workmanship but because people tore it up for stone used to build newer buildings, and in doing so made it more vulnerable to earthquakes.

    > A quadcopter should be able to carry heavier loads of longer distances though.

Is that true? Seems like weight and distance is mostly about power and energy, the number of rotors only marginal. What a quad does offer is a different, maybe simpler, control compared to a main+tail helicopter.

The lift is limited by mass of air moved which (in this case) is limited by airspeed at the tip of rotors, because if that goes above speed of sound/speed of vibrations in air, then really bad things happen. Ingenuity was already quite close to that with one 'rotor column' (it has two rotors in it but moving the same column of air). The air on Mars is so thin they need to spin extremely quickly. So, my understanding is that the only way to get bigger payloads is more rotors and spaced out.

'Longer distance' is presumably about battery capacity and/or solar panel surface area, or whatever other power solution is used ie. mainly down to needing heavier loads. Being able to locate solar panels out of the airflow (surrounded by rotors instead of in the centre of them) sounds like an efficiency advantage too.

    Finally!

ASPI: "Shadow Play [is] one of the first times video essays [and] generative AI [are] used as a tactic in an influence operation"

This is super News! As Canalys APAC panel noted: "few businesses actually have any concrete idea what they would do with [genAI]". Well, now they have a winning use case: cheap mass propaganda! Yippee!

Of them causing them incidents, or getting got externally?

The world would be a better place blocking anything out of china, russia, and other undesirable places as a whole anymore. Nothing good comes out, if they did want to, they'd use something not of their country so toxic.

A great firewall of 'murica isn't so bad an idea anymore, keeps me from having to invest in better firewalls if it worked.

well, I've just discovered that yandex translate is better (not hugely, but just a bit) better than google translate - and not only in en-ru language combination. Plus, 'Lad's word' ;)

    Flavour of the year...

quote: AI may be the hype flavour of the month (or year) few businesses actually have any concrete idea what they would do with it.

Before AI it was the metaverse. Remember the metaverse? Maybe not. It hasn't featured on El Reg much lately. I'm so old I can remember when it was Rubik cubes and Cabbage Patch dolls. Fads are getting bigger every year. I wonder what people will be playing with next year, when they aren't making money flogging dull but useful stuff.
