back to article Qualcomm promises 'premium performance' in Gen 3 Snapdragon 7 phone chips

Qualcomm has lifted the lid on its Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 series of mobile processors, which is intended to bring “premium performance” to smartphones at a lower price point than top-end components. The US semiconductor giant claims its latest silicon delivers across-the-board advancements in on-device AI, gaming support, camera …

    Cue lukewarm applause

What I want is not a faster smartphone, but a smartphone with a battery that lasts a week in normal use. In terms of real wold scenarios we've seen pitiful progress on that measure since forever, and if ever there's the prospect of better battery life, the makers throw it away with ludicrously thin, slippery phones, or ludicrous resolution, high refresh rate screens.

Yeah, I'd gladly have 2mm of extra thickness for a 50% better battery endurance. Why this obsession with absurd slimness? Oh, and in the Good Old Days(tm), batteries were actually replaceable - imagine!

I never did understand why the push to have ultra slim phones that we then immediately put in a big fat case to stop them from breaking. Why not make the phone bigger, fatter and tougher but fill that otherwise empty padding space with more battery life. I too miss the Nokia brick phone days of "must remember to charge it on Sunday for the week...."

How about an actual "midrange" unit, one is the $/£600 price bracket, with useful features like good battery life, an SD card slot, actual "midrange" performance worthy of the name and a very good - but not 4-sensor-fantastic - camera?? Is that asking too much in today's world?!

Low-priced model selection: great! High-end model selection: great! Mid-range? Err, we'll get back to you on that, just pony up the £1000 and stop being 'cheap' damnit.

While I'm mostly in the low-priced camp, how about some of these? I've had to guess on some things, like what is required for a camera to be "very good" (I've limited it to 30 megapixels or higher). You can customize these, but there seem to be quite a few options there.

      I'm curious

What is the use case for a phone that has a battery that lasts a week?

Is it that much of a hassle to plug it into a charger every night? Or every other night if you have a phone like mine with a battery that's enough for two days' usage? (Or two days of my usage, at least)

I suspect people who want a phone with a week's battery life is such a small niche you'll never see your dream realized. If new technology allowed batteries the size of the current ones to last a week, every smartphone OEM would use much smaller batteries.

You will need one of those battery cases for your phone if you want much longer battery life, though I doubt anyone makes one big enough to provide a week's battery life.
