back to article European Commission loves Oracle enough to sign six-year cloud deal

Oracle has signed a deal with the European Commission to provide Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and its platform services across EU administrations. The Commission selected OCI following a competitive procurement procedure, although Big Red has not disclosed the winning bid, The Reg understands is valued at €15.75 million …

    World's richest trading bloc?

That would depend on the definition of "richest". Looking at the more objective WEF or World Bank analyses, the EU comes third or fourth behind the AsPacific RCEP, the North American USMCA, and the AsPacific CPTPP (overlapping RCEP somewhat). Then again, the EU Commission have always viewed numbers as a flexible friend, as their auditors well know.

That would depend on the definition of "bloc". You can't compare commercial partnerships with a supranational entity as the EU is.

      Largest

Yeah, by richest we mean largest - that's been tweaked now. Don't forget to drop corrections@theregister.com a note if you spot something odd, please.

    'less risk and cost'

And I guess Larry will not be the one paying when neither comes true?

In these large deals, with many minions involved on even more levels, I always wonder who is paying whom above and under the table (in direct and indirect currencies).

    What about GDPR?

How can the EU have deals with AWS and Oracle, since they have to obey orders from the US government to give it access to any data they are hosting?

      Re: What about GDPR?

Use your own Encryption keys, and the US can do all it wants and it wouldn't be able to read the data

    "less risk and cost."

and less he'll break your windows and knees "systemise speaking" than them try and move off Oracle systems. Oracle acts like a less morally focused drug pusher, once you are in you'd better keep buying or you are screwed by the dealer, let alone the drugs...

My general feeling is that, the bigger the org, the less benefit someone else's cloud will provide. Cloud tech is great, but it isn't, despite what BigCloud wants you to think, synonymous with outsourcing.

    Or-exit

1 vote for the above from Ireland.

If we leave Or we'll have

    - frictionless data movement to the US

    - take back control of the indexes

    - the database buffers will magically get bigger and you won't have to pay

    - lice-nse free database usage

    - the savings going to the massive bonuses for commissioners

    Right?

Assume we shall get an update story in roughly a few years time telling us how over budget, a quarter implemented and not fit for purpose it is. Meanwhile another sucker signs an Oracle contract and they coin it in.

That's the good option - I'm expecting something more on the lines of the 9 Kings of men who accepted the gift of rings.....

    This will not end well.

    Wow, 6 years!

We got strong armed into putting workloads in ICI. Our ERP is an Oracle product, but it is running in AWS. We wanted a license reduction, but Oracle said if we do that, we lose our discount. But if we move our ERP into OCI they will give is the discount. We said no. So, then they came back with "If you do a POC for OCI we will let you keep your discount". We did, it sucks, we said no, we are not doing that. So, then these crooks came back with "Well, if you don't use OCi we can't give you the discount." (f'ing blackmail).

So, we have to put at least a $3500/mo spend in OCI. We moved some workloads over. The whole thing is a piece of sheit! Networking is antiquated, performance is poor!

Oracle is like doing business with the MOB! Something we are very familiar with having to deal with construction unions int he US.

Good luck EU, you will need it! You are going to pay way more than you think you are!

OCI - they check in, they don't check out.

The only thing more expensive than hosting your data in OCI is getting your data out of OCI.
