back to article RISC-V org claims export restrictions would stifle innovation

The CEO of RISC-V International is warning US politicos that subjecting the open processor standard to export restrictions could result in the development of incompatible solutions and stifle innovation. The admonition comes after members of the US Congress expressed concerns that Washington was not doing enough to deny China …

    Told you so

I hate to brag, but I told you so, told you so, told you so!

Since the accuracy of my predictions are uncanny. let me make another one. The U.S. will threaten to ask for the extradition and conviction of the RISC-V Foundation executives if their demands for reigning in the transfer of technology to China isn't stopped. Let me make it clear that you don't want the world's mightiest nation to hold a grudge against you.

I believe such a threat will quickly result in the RISC-V Foundation relocating to the U.S. and becoming much more closed, with only a few select members being able to see and use the full specifications of the ISA.

      Meh

      Re: Told you so

I'm getting the impression that most RISC-V development is actually taking place in China though, so they can probably manage just fine with out any involvement from the West.

Yes, many Chinese manufacturers are using the RISC-V ISA to avoid trade sanctions and producing designs based on it, but most of the development still takes place in the West. We'll see divergence after a while.

If the US wants to shut itself off from the rest of the world RISC-V market place as it develops - fine. Let them play catch-up later on.

    FAIL

"Potentially defeating the object of the restrictions in the first place"

Not just defeating the restrictions, but making them ineffective ever after, while boosting local skills, knowledge and experience, and possibly even giving China the technological advantage which they too can control.

True, it will cost, but what price would anyone put on having sovereignty, not being beholden to America and her anti-competitive practices?

For a little bit more they could deliver under cost and potentially wipe out American competitors.

I don't think China is going to be at all worried. America should be.

    More than enough

"the US Congress expressed concerns that Washington was not doing enough to deny China access to advanced chip technology"

Oh, I dunno, the evidence so far is that they've already done more than enough to stimulate China to catch up and overtake the USA within 5 or 10 years.
