back to article In rare bout of generosity, Oracle extends free support for Database 19c

Oracle watchers are scratching their heads trying to figure out what seems like an uncharacteristic act of generosity from the enterprise tech behemoth. Good news for Birmingham

More time to get off Oracle.

Unless it comes with strings attached like you must update to 23c... It's Oracle, of course it will.

I swear Oracle 8i is the last version of their database server that was actually purchased and used by people...

Has anyone ever seen newer in the wild or did everyone migrate to a different DBMS entirely.

I have applications on 10G & 12C1, I have to access some data on 9 - pretty certain there is stuff on 19C in our data centre - but we have been instructed to try moving off Oracle by some C suite which wouldn't be so bad if they didn't set unrealistic deadlines which include cloud migrations

In rare bout of generosity, Oracle...

Whenever I see a phrase like that relating to Oracle or IBM, my next question is always, "What's the catch?".

It's not generous and it's not rare.

Oracle added years of extended support for 11g and 12c. They did it to give customers time to upgrade.

Ending mainline support in May with on-premise versions (on supported hardware platforms) not available until next year was clearly not tenable.

Support is 22.5% per annum. They were always going to extend, announcing it later would have just caused more trouble for customers.
