The International Criminal Court said crooks breached its IT systems last week, and that attack isn't over yet, with the ICC saying the "cybersecurity incident" is still ongoing. In a statement shared via the site formerly known as Twitter, the Hague war crimes tribunal said it detected "anomalous activity" at the end of last …

ICC issued arrest warrant against Vladimir Putin

These warrants make the ICC a "prime target for cyber attacks," Jelle Wieringa, security awareness advocate for EMEA at security shop KnowBe4 told The Register.

Well be gratefull Putin didn't bomb the ICC. The new unipoler rules-based world. Where the US gets to set the rules and break them anytime it suits them.

The American Service-Members' Protection Act .. gives the President power to use “all means necessary and appropriate to bring about the release of any U.S. or allied personnel being detained or imprisoned by, on behalf of, or at the request of the International Criminal Court.”’

    How International is international

The US doesn't recognise it, Russia doesn't recognise it, China doesn't recognise it, India doesn't recognise it. That covers a lot of the world's population.

Ok, so "International" in this case means only the ones not actively trying to build an a sort-of-fascistoid empire. Understandable, but still ethically problematic.

Ah, but Ukraine do recognise it. And Putin chose to kidnap those children from Ukraine. Where the ICC has jurisdiction. Oops!

"...ICC probes suspected war crimes committed by Russia during its invasion of Ukraine" - Not sure there's much "suspected" or alleged; it's all pretty bloody obvious. And those Russians are soooo brave targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure. Bloody murderers.

    1. parlei

Well, yes. But legally anyone is a "suspect" or "accused" until found guilty by a court of law.

Innocent until proven guilty. Including those alleged Ukrainian fascists who were executing pro-Russian separatists during their ethnic cleansing of the east.

So who does recognise the international Cricket council (ahem) ICC

So if the big guns don't recognize it that leaves oh guess what basically Europe and the southern hemisphere and its doubtful a lot of african and south American countries even know it even exists as they dont play cricket ;-) .

In reality the ICC issues warrants that no one upholds. just means should putin or whoever a warrant is issued for should set foot in a country where they do recognise it then they may be arrested, unless they are on a diplomatic mission of course and just try it and therell be a massive gun fight by the body guards i suspect which no country would want at an airport. So a bit pointless in reality.

Re: So who does recognise the international Cricket council (ahem) ICC

      darklord,

Well you say no-one upholds ICC warrants. But when Putin was going to go to the BRICS conference in South Africa - he cancelled at the last minute. Because the opposition challenged the government in the courts, that they would have to implement the ICC arrest warrant, and the courts ruled they would. So he had to address his own conference by video call, and stay home to avoid arrest. Embarrassing, but funny.

So in reality, what you should have said is that the ICC issues warrants that some people uphold. And it has brought some war crimials to justice. It is however not a perfect institution. Personally I'm not even sure it's a good idea. Sometimes it's better to end a conflict with a dirty deal and save lives, rather than get justice for the victims. That's what diplomacy is for. But on the other hand it's an institution that's done some good and ruined the lives of some truly evil people, and maybe put the fear into some others - while also getting open information out there about their crimes, that might make future conflicts less likely - or at least allow some people to find out an approximation of the truth in sectarian conflicts where there's little reliable information.

Down vote only for this: "Sometimes it's better to end a conflict with a dirty deal and save lives, rather than get justice for the victims.". It isn't about ending conflict but punishing murderers after the fact.

It would be better if the world actually exerted itself and severely punished those countries, such as Russia, militarily when they commit such crimes.
