back to article Reports of the PC's death are greatly exaggerated, says IDC

The PC market is expected to return to growth in 2024, according to estimates from IDC analysts. Still, industry players might want to taper their enthusiasm. PC shipments are forecast to grow 3.7 percent year-on-year to hit 261.4 million units in 2024, putting them above 2018 levels, but not quite on par with 2019 demand. …

Don’t believe everything from IDC you read about Mac sales

Yes, they were down early this year over pandemic and Apple Silicon introduction quarters. But second-generation Apple Silicon (M2) machines are available now, and the there’s this about enterprise sales: https://appleinsider.com/articles/23/08/29/apple-hardware-is-a-benefit-to-enterprise-survey-reveals

Another factor: Windows 11 hardware requirements

Suspect many of those office-based desktops were purchased before CoViD and probably don't satisfy Windows 11 hardware requirements. So added incentive to return to the office is a new desktop running Windows 11 and if you have committed to a Office PC refresh, it would be nice if there were people in the office to use the new kit...

Demand might be tepid because the prices have gotten a wee bit ridiculous.

2010 and mentions the cloud - "as the geeks say" - it would take a few more years for the marketing folk to catch up.

    In the real world.

Like an awful lot of people I know, I used the Co-19 lockdown to invest in new kit as I was spending much more time online. I bought kit much grander that normal for home use, because I anticipated using it for a wider range of tasks, and it is Windows 11 ready,

So, it is going to need to be in service for longer before replacement is envisaged. Especially so while high prices are being asked. I am a PC fan, because I like several large displays with massive memory and storage and a comfortable environment while using it.

Is not rare to use the same PC for several years, so of course the same people who bought computers one year is unlikely to do it the year afterwards
