Do you seriously want to watch a tv program or a movie and have to explain to your children why Lenin, V.I., Hitler, A., and Bono, S. are all credited as screenwriters? On the other hand, just think how long movies will be in the future with 13 billion authors to credit. And you think the fine print on your credit card application is tiny...
I personally think copyright should be returned to 14 years, and the fee for the 14 year extension should be 10% of gross sales during the original 14 year period.
Afraid of too much credit? Don't worry, in 15 years most of the writers will be replaced by AI, it's just a matter of time. However, I also believe that a lot of actors will be as well, as they're the easiest thing to replace (just need more scans and better CGI). In 30 years you'll be able to make generate a movie from your phone. I know people don't want this, but it's hard to not see this becoming a reality. Hell, I won't be surprised that if in the next couple of years we'll see 100% generated tik-tok style video content, and I don't mean the current clip-art/robo-voice/listicle stuff we have now on youtube.
Perhaps I should have chosen the joke alert avatar rather than the devil, but then I'm not 100% joking either. If an LLM generates its output based on copyrighted material, credit very might well be due.
Copyright protection periods are definitely way too long though.

As I am completely uninterested in comic book superheros, Hollywood hasn't been providing me with much commercial content in the last, oh, decade. Reality TV is likewise useless to me. About the only style of cinema that can get me to sit still for over an hour, is arthouse stuff that teaches me something fresh about the human condition. Explorations of unique contemporary moral dilemmas are an area of art that I remain unconvinced AI can even approximate. Large statistical models can't really get you there. So what big producers in Hollywood do or do not agree to, is pretty much irrelevant to me at this late stage of the game. Choosing to produce AI generated movies would just make it less likely that I woud ever want to purchase any of their product. My interest is already pretty sparse. That would almost certainly kill it.

The lazier ones are adding new installments to 20-year old franchises, and the laziest of them all are going for complete remakes. It's a good thing that Netflix has a big selection of international movies, the effects might not be so slick but the storylines are much more original.

But enough about Disney. Writers seem to be missing a really big cluebat hovering over the plot. A lot of stuff that's been written recently has been atrocious and that's been reflected in the box office, or ratings. If the product isn't selling, why would writers expect to get paid more money? If the writers and creatives are directly responsible for box office bombs, why would they expect to get paid? As review channels like Critical Drinker or Disparu keep pointing out, much of the writing just sucks. People pay for entertainment. So entertain them, don't try to bombard them with poorly created content that's often implausible to push whatever narrative is trendy at the moment.
At least we still have indies, and Netlfix's international shows. Korea and a lot of Asian stuff don't seem bothered with the woke stuff, and just entertain.
Maybe another clue in the quality of writing is that the writers involved are told to produce a particular kind of formulaic script. They might want to be creative and novel but the paymasters want something bland and formulaic, what they think will work.
LLMs are very good at this kind of task. So all that's happening is that the grunt work gets automated. Just like with every other type of job. There will still be a place for writers, just fewer of them. A lot fewer.
True, but is that because the writers can't do better or that they know studios simply won't take risks? Sequels, prequels, re-hashes, re-makes & reboots, "franchises" and "safe, well known" book/comics adaptions and even live-action remakes of animations are the order of the day and have been for at least the last three decades.
That's just ass-backwards as to how it works anyway. Some good writers might be able to incorporate GAI into their writing style - with GAI offering suggestions, filling in details, editing - in a way that improves the human writers throughput. From the studios point of view that is transparent - they only need to worry about end result quality as they always have.
Giving a GAI generated script to human and asking them to polish it - garbage in garbage out.
This is really not so different from using an AI programming assistant.
I really need to consider a career change. I can write better TV shows while blind stinking drunk than the drivel that passes for storylines and dialogue these days. However, that's not really saying anything, when the bar is already set low enough to trip ants.
