back to article X-rated auction sells last vestiges of pre-Musk Twitter

In case you were heretofore unconvinced that Twitter is dead and is never coming back, the latest sell-off of branded tat might sway you. The wayward social media network is headed back to the auction house with a stunning 678 lots under the hammer, evoking images of Elon Musk stalking the halls, selecting which pieces of …

all at the low, low starting price of $25

Zuckerburg should buy it all, then blow it all up live on the web. He can post how much it cost as the title : "How much I spent blowing up Twitter : $few thousand vs How much Elon Musk spent blowing up Twitter : $44 Billion"

He could buy it all, and especially the sign that is still on the building - then do nothing about removing it - that will annoy the hell out of Musk. Once that's gone one for awhile, secure a prominent location opposite Twitter/X HQ to transfer the sign to - now, Musk can't do anything about it - other than moving HQ - though that may be sometime soon when the landlords get fed up of Musk

Even better, not pay for it. String him along for a bit saying he needs to just move a little money around or can't sell stock until the next trading window, then when that comes and goes, come up with a new excuse and just see how long he can keep it going.

I'm sure Twitter's many unpaid vendors and suppliers will appreciate the pyrrhic victory.

Zuck buys the Twitter sign and rebrands Facebook's Nuked-Sheffield themed messaging app as "Twitter"

I expect the auction company has a bidder's agreement that requires wins to be paid within a day or two and removed in a short period of time or the bidder will forfeit the win and any monies paid. The item(s) will be re-auctioned/sold or disposed of. Better would be Zuck buying the exterior signage and installing it draped in black in whatever office is being used for Threads. A small plaque can show the price paid.

Wait, that would be at Malta airport?

I was hoping for an appropriate Roman period fighting spectacular with Musk taking on Zuckerberg first and then, if he is still standing, taking on some hungry lions and tigers

Why am I thinking of the Star Trek and Futurama episodes... I highly doubt this confrontation will take the form of a physical smack down thing... They will continue to use their platforms to fling poo!

    X

When Twitter/X embedded references appear on other sites, the "X" appears at the top right of the bounding frame. My first instinct is to click on that to close the damn thing. Instead, the page redirects to Twitter/X as that is really a link.

A cunning ploy by Musk to drive traffic to his site.

      Good point.

It's possibly a new example of deceptive design, and yes, Musk doesn't strike me as being above questionable tactics.

    Last vestiges?

I found out the other day that opening an image from twitter feed in another tab (in order to zoom in a bit) that the new tab has the blue Twitter bird.

Indicative - I think - that no matter that Musk throws out everything he sees with the Twitter name on it, there'll be something lurking somewhere to remind him he didn't invent it.

Oh lord, I hadn't even considered that possibility. The whole rename could just be a childish attempt to claim he's the founder of X.

paid for posts that achieve high engagement.

"paid for posts that achieve high engagement."

Just creating a post to get "engagement" or more "followers", "likes", whatever other "social media" voting/rankings schemes are out there, has already lead to the inevitable degradation of post quality from "a concise thought in 240 chars or less" to "who can make the most outrageous or inflammatory posts possible". Paying for the same will only make it worse. Much, much worse. Rewarding bad behaviour with cash. What a wonderful idea. Not.

Social media desperately needs downvote/dislike buttons next to the upvote/like buttons. Who cares if 10,000 people "like" a post when there's no way to tell if a million people "dislike" a post? Although I doubt Musk cares. Like and dislike are both "engagement".

Much easier .... as in requiring 'No Engagement from me and millions of others who do not care' is the following :

Set a 'Meh" button to 32 Billion or so then decrement it for each 'Like' !!!

Everyone will be able to see just how important their opinion 'really' is in the scheme of things.

Meanwhile, the rest of us can continue our lives blissfully unaware of the 'impo(r)tance' of these 'Likes' !!!

      :)

P.S. Threads can have this idea for free !!! ..... best of luck !!!

      :)

Re: paid for posts that achieve high engagement.

There needs to be a "Fuck off" button that only shows up on Twitler's posts. If there were a paid Twitter service where I could pay to have someone punch Twitler in the face, or plant their boot up his ass, or even just give him a good slap... he'd probably sold Twitter's cash flow problems almost overnight.

Fingers crossed for someone to buy both signs, offer the building owners rental, then - just leave them up.

Does the city have an office for cultural heritage that can be asked to recognise the importance of Twitter in popular culture? The plaques are already blue...
