back to article Europe sticks a monopoly probe into Adobe-Figma merger

The European Commission has launched an "in-depth" investigation into Adobe's $20 billion deal to acquire Figma, citing concerns that the proposed takeover could harm competition in the design software industry. Adobe has struggled to get the deal past regulators since the biz gobble was announced in September. In February …

    Stop

    Just a minute

"We believe Figma and Adobe can deliver far more value for designers, creators and knowledge workers together than either company could deliver on its own"

Why do you have to merge to work together ?

Can't you just agree on a common product line, and have your engineers and developers work in shared teams ?

Because merging will bring nothing to designers, creators and knowledge workers. It will, however, consolidate shareholder value (extremely important), merge marketing departments and customer liists (there will be layoffs), and synergize development departments (there will be layoffs). Accounting will be in a tizzy for a year or two as well (and there will be layoffs).

But I see nothing in it for designers, creators and knowledge workers.

    Maybe that's just me.

But the purpose of a company - any company - is to make money for the shareholders. All else is secondary...

I've never known an Adobe takeover that wasn't designed to extinguish a competitor.

    FAIL

    Acquisitions are just a way

To crush competitors, reduce staff (Sales, Support, SEs, etc...) and increase profits for shareholders.

The governments holding up approval better keep doing so for Figma's sake!

      Yes and no.

It's similar to MS office Vs Libre Office

It's only a monopoly is because people learn on it, then have to deal with others using and are scared to try anything new.

Affinity make some cracking tools. Yes they don't have all the bells and whistles and not all RAW formats work well, but I'd say for amateurs and semi-pros who don't have to pass files around, they just like Libre Office, are good enough for most.

Europe sticks a monopoly probe into Adobe-Figma merger

Good, and I still remember this report:

"An Adobe spokesperson said that combining Adobe and Figma will “deliver significant value to customers by making product design more accessible and efficient, reimagining creative capabilities on the web and creating new categories of creativity and productivity.”

^ It won't do that at all and all it will do is decrease competition and innovation and concentrate more power in Adobe. Similarly, and also on competition grounds, Corel should never have been allowed to take over Gravit Designer which has since been lacerated by Corel.

Based on MS Activision. This wont get blocked. Though there is growing concern over these mergers.

Adobe are just terrible but can keep buying up more automatic success and any innovation they need.
