back to article Baidu builds AI into cars so you can distract the kids with text-to-image tools

China's AI-forward web giant Baidu has delivered on its promise to have its ERNIE large language model (LLM) used in cars, naming carmaker Great Wall Motors and "digital cockpit" creator ECARX as collaborators. Baidu has described its new pals as "initial exploration partners" for the application of its ERNIE 3.5 model in …

I already have this in MY car, apparently.

I asked my infotainment system to draw me a picture of what happened in Tiananmen Square on June 4th, 1989... and it produced nothing at all.

Pretty clever of Baidu, I must admit, to get their AI system factory-installed into a 1993 Nissan pickup truck.

And Nissan somehow skipped "Unit 731" from their parts numbers

    Don't mock the assisted drawing

or the car makers will take it away but *still* insist on having "AI enabled" *something* (just for market differentiation, as the quote in the article notes).

At least pictures of flying pandas are safe. Encourage this idea in cars across the world (ok, it'll be pictures of eagles and/or wolves in other countries, or flying teapots in certain other regions-with-obvious-stereotypes).

Otherwise we're going to get "enhanced" wipers (trained in California weather, confuse Manchester for the car wash and refuse to come out of hiding); headlights (that "helpfully blink to warn the car turning across your lane that you are approaching fast, to make sure that they have seen you"); windows (that roll down every time you crawl past the Bradford and Bingley "drive in bank" during rush hour in the snow).

Or worse, some maniac is going to connect the AI to the steering!

      Didn't Tesla do that?

Not looking forward to Toyota Corolla 'old person' AI

It drives down the middle of the road, except on motorways where it drives the wrong way, it goes 40mph on all roads and gets accelerator/brakes confused in car parks

" but has offered only scant details of how LLMs and generative AI make cars more … anything."

What about "Ability to analyse movement and behaviour patterns alerting authorities to unwanted interactions between individuals. Analysing and recognising anti-state speech patterns. Preempting and automatically reporting illegal behaviour such as speeding, meeting undesirables or looking at pictures of Winnie the Poo. Identifying authorised occupants of vehicles and legality of travel destinations. Automatically identify, report and take control of miscreants in a vehicle by driving them to the nearest secret police station."

    Loads of uses ...

If the AI can keep answering 'Are we nearly there yet?' without getting testy, it's worth it. If it could clean up vomit and dropped sweets, it would be worth it's weight in gold.

At the very least an in-car AI should be able to e.g. change the starter motor as I have just done, to save me climbing under the car!
