back to article AWS is running a 96-core, 192-thread, custom Xeon server

Amazon Web Services has started offering a cloudy server packing a custom fourth-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor and boasting 96 cores or 192 vCPUs. It's almost certainly not a colossal chip that features 36 more cores than the mightiest Xeon Intel lists for sale to the public – the 60-core Platinum 8490H – and …

Or it is a dual socket server, with their 48 core CPUs in it.

Yeah, the comment near the bottom of the article kind of suggests this:

Bare metal M7I instances are in the works, with either 96 or 192 vCPUs.

So, bare metal with 48 cores & 96 vCPUs or bare metal with 96 cores & 192 vCPUs. Seems like some bare metal machines with 1 socket available/used and others with 2 sockets.

      Two socket

Yeah, that makes sense (as we said in the piece) but it's such a strange way for AWS to market this "custom" silicon if that's the case.

And we've asked Amazon, which it isn't being entirely clear. We'll get to the bottom of it.

        Re: Two socket

Was that always there? I read through it looking to see if it was mentioned that it was a dual socket server before posting and didn't see it.

If it was always there, l somehow completely missed it in my reading of the article, probably not the first time :).

"We've asked AWS and Intel to confirm that spec is correct" - or just fire up an instance to see!

Also dmidecode (although less useful if it's not bare metal)

    Luxury!

Running a virtual desktop at work. The 2 CPUs of the 7 year old Xeon I have been allocated struggles to run, well, everything :-(

But how soon will this become the minimum for running MS Office?

Depends whether you count Teams as Office, I guess.

    Really??????

Is that all?? IBM Power10 240 cores, 1920 threads. Intel are a long way behind here.

      Re: Really??????

240 cores in 16 sockets, yes... but you probably know that. Ampere can do 256 with just 2.

        Re: Really??????

Apparently so can SPARC T series, but I wouldn't call them real cores either.

    The important question...

    I just have to ask...

THE question which was asked about all new computing hardware BITD - Does it play Space Invaders? :) LOL

    speculation......

On what the host chipset might be.........

Cooper Lake variant with 2 dies in one socket

    https://www.guru3d.com/news-story/10nm-ice-lake-(38-cores)-and-14nm-cooper-lake-(48-cores)-xeon-cpu-specs-leak.html

    Maybe AWS liked that one.
