back to article Global Slack messaging outage cuts world off from colleagues

No, your colleagues aren't just taking ages to respond, Slack is currently staggering to its feet after experiencing a global outage across all regions. Although the Status page until just minutes ago was showing a sea of green ticks, the problems started about an hour ago. Other app platform functions such as Notifications, …

Hodgson sounds like a real try-hard. As if all of the readers on here don’t understand the tradeoffs of distributed systems.

Also, Teams sucks. I love how it puts up an “Oh no, there’s something wrong with your internet connection!” message every time you start it, like nobody on the test team ever actually sat and looked at what it does on startup.

      Test team ?

I have news for you, my friend. Come over here, it's going to take some time . . .

"bought [..] in 2020 for $27 billion, hauled in $1.5 billion [..] for its fiscal 2022"

At that rythm, it'll take until 2038 to recoup the investment.

Well, who said planning was a lost art ?

Oh wait, it wasn't planning, now was it ?

$1.5 billion in *revenue*, not profit. So who knows when/if they will get enough profit to get a return on that $27 billion investment.

Cough... maybe we'll use letters and stamps next time.

Businesses will stumble around, either relying solely on outdated email, or switching to consumer-grade messaging services in an attempt to keep communication flowing.

I'm sorry, is this guy denigrating E-MAIL at a time when Slack is crashing itself? Is he suggesting that we shouldn't default to a system which seems to be 99.99% reliable and instead should twiddle our thumbs waiting for the latest Slack outage to get fixed?

I say nonsense to that! For me it'll be Threads... or maybe a fax.

No, he's just stating the fax....

Close, but I think you'll find he's suggesting we should use Element & Matrix (whatever they are), rather than any twiddling of anyone's thumbs.

Totally OT, but who runs those appElement things again?

As someone who covers first line support on a helpdesk as part of my job, I can confirm that email is not 99.99% reliable.

For example there was that time office364 decided that the provider we used to host the images for email signatures was bad and our clients started contacting us saying their internal emails were going to the spam folder... Followed by asking why we weren't replying, because Microsoft was totally blocking our replies for the same reason without even sending them to spam.

We have had many people email us, we reply, then 2 weeks later they email in asking if we got their email because they haven't had a reply. We tell users to phone us if they haven't had a reply from a human confirming we got their message within 45 minutes during office hours.

The company has received 2 formal complaints from users against the helpdesk staff in the 2 years I have been working there. One was against me for not replying to someone. The ticket system recorded my replies, the logs showed they had gone to spam...

Do they test their product deployments?

One of the channels I have on my enterprise slack workspace reports on outages and the resolutions from Slack admin.

Almost all of them end up saying something like "we made a change. It broke stuff. We backed out the change."

    "A sea of green ticks"

It is one of the expected experiences of an outage that the provider who is failing to deliver a service will be the last to acknowledge it, will even refuse to admit there is a problem.

And, when they do, no matter how great the outage was, "only a few customers have been affected".

“Come back Teams, all is forgiven”

No. Just, no. Slack could be not only down, but also worming through my address book and sending gratuitous racial slurs to my contacts list - and it would still be preferable to Teams.

Teams - nothing will ever be forgiven.

    App, schmapp…

I honestly don't see any point for a Slack app, it works perfectly fine in my web browser.

(And what's the bets that the so-called app is just the usual bloated stuff-a-browser-in-an-Electron-bun junk anyway?)

    Maybe..

People should try dialing a phone number and talklng again.

      Re: Maybe..

Talk to a human? Why on earth should I want to do that? I mean, God supposedly communicated with Moses by dropping him texts (on stone tablets), and who am I to go against the will of a vengeful, narrow minded god of migrant goat herders?
