back to article Make chips, not trade wars, says Semiconductor Industry Association

The US Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) has stepped into the fray to lower tensions between Washington and Beijing over chip exports, as well as calling for further restrictions to be put on ice. Relations between the two superpowers have become increasingly strained since the US launched a campaign to block shipments …

    Forfeiting leadership

All that the US has achieved by doing this has been to motivate China to become an alternate source/supplier for all these technologies. The result will be that they will compete and undercut all western companies forcing them to struggle. The China will continue to move forward with extremely high momentum while western companies (and Taiwan) struggle to recoup their investments on R&D. Eventually China will end up as the preferred suppliers for all these technologies.

The wins for the west are short term and short sited. Even if the restrictions are lifted today, China’s forward momentum will only slow, not stop. They will cut their dependence on western suppliers.

The only good news is, by the time China is far in the lead, the people responsible for starting this will be too old (or even dead) to care… as if they’re not pretty much there already.
