back to article China sets AI rules that protect IP, people, the planet, and The Party

Chinese authorities published the nation's rules governing generative AI on Thursday, including protections that aren't in place elsewhere in the world. Some of the rules require operators of generative AI to ensure their services "adhere to the core values of socialism" and don't produce output that includes "incitement to …

    What is "The Party"?

In theory "the Party" represents the interests of "the people", that is, all of us. We in our societies live by "the core value of Capitalism" which loosely translates to the primacy of money with everything rendered in terms of monetary worth. This leads to awkward kludges when the needs of society collide with the core values of capitalism where we try to make a market in some social good and unfortunately quite often fail at it. We also allow our society to be 'captured' -- purchased -- by capital, a notion what was enshrined in the UK when the "There Is No Alternative" mindset saw off the post-war mixed market. (....and there's a direct line between TINA and fiascos like the London Water Company)

You may or may not like the Chinese way of doing things but its the Chinese way of doing things, its their society and culture and they evolve solutions that suit their needs. You will recall that they tried our model and it didn't work that well -- they refer to the period where they experienced colonialism as the 'century of humiliation'. We don't like their way of doing things because it has the potential to be a lot more efficient than our model since they're able to manipulate capital costs to direct investment where its most needed rather than solely where it generates the best returns for banks and investment houses. Personally I prefer the pre-TINA model because we (in the UK) tried the mixed market post-WW2 because the pre-war model just didn't deliver.

They tried capitalism when they were on the receiving end of colonialism? No, they tried colonialism, specifically the wrong part of colonialism. That part never works out well.

There are many examples of The Party protecting the interests of the people with batons and pepper sprays and little rooms you don't leave for a long time, the people must be so grateful that The Party is looking out for them.

Challenging the State directly never ends well, be it students in China or Occupy Wall St. in the US -- or whatever-they-complaining-about in France. By our western standards the Chinese authorities tend initially to be more restrained in dealing with protests and demonstrations than we are.

This is an ongoing problem that we have -- we've been so inculcated with the whole "Four legs good, Two legs bad" thing that many people just repeat what they've been brought up to believe rather than the actual reality. The complaint that I have with reporting about China, for example, is that its some kind of backwards hell-hole with a sorely oppressed populace yearning to break free of its 'boot on the neck, forever'. This is completely at odds with the everyday reality there but until we can learn to see the place as "similar, but different" we're going to be stuck spinning our wheels.

People just repeat this over and over but if you read eye witness accounts from these periods then you find it was at once better and yet worse than the simple black/white choice that we're presented with in our media. For example, Nazi Germany didn't really turn the mass oppression on until quite late in WW2 when they were quite clearly losing (and being bombed night and day). Before that between selective enforcement and the propaganda barrage the public found themselves quite happy with their government (and what's not talked about in polite western society is that quite a few political and business leaders in the 'free' world were quite happy with the Nazis).

China's always been different. The Japanese occupation set new standards in barbarism which were shocking even to the Germans who were living in China. The Chinese communists fell out with the Russian ones in the late 20s, they were determined to follow their own model. The RoC -- the Chinese Nationalists -- were no pussycats and headed a rather nasty fascist type regime on Taiwan after 1949 (we also don't talk about South Korea in that era for the same reason). There's a lot to learn if you keep your eyes and ears open because believe it or not it really can happen here (if its not already happening).

Yes, but aren't we talking about China, why bring the US into it?

      Re: What is "The Party"?

What is the Party can be demonstrated more succinctly by the actions taken by it in 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre.

“There will be no curiosity, no enjoyment of the process of life. All competing pleasures will be destroyed. But always— do not forget this, Winston— always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless.

If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face— forever. ”

There's nothing more I strive for than clean data. Is it possible? Not when talking about scraping every human's thoughts! There's no way I can sanitise the thoughts of eight billion of "those nutters"!

Since when have China acknowledged IP. They normally stick two fingers when questioned. But if the shoe is on the other foot, PRC must be protected lol.
