back to article Semiconductor execs try to push UK government to do more for industry

A group of British chip company execs has called on the government to do more to support industry, a month after officials published the nation's Semiconductor Strategy laying out policy initiatives for this vital technology sector. In a report titled "The UK Semiconductor Industry – Our Opportunity," [PDF] the Semiconductor …

Might as well ask the cat

Unless you've been asleep these past years, you will know that when Boris said "Fuck business", he really meant it. Because since then all out government has been able to do is fuck business. Sometimes slowly. Sometimes quickly. But either way it leaves a hole sore somewhere.

Unless the execs can show how this might feed into the current obsession with immigration, refugees and eliminating our human rights, there's nobody listening.

Such is the problem of politics and them allocating our money.

    what UK semiconductor industry?

Last year's House of Commons* report on this subject shows this dire lobbying is just pointless bullshit.

Here are just a few of the report's standout quotes:

    1. The UK accounts for only 0.5% of sales of semiconductors across the world.

    2. No fabs in the UK can produce the most advanced silicon semiconductors, with a node of below 28 nm; and there is little immediate prospect of such facilities being constructed in the UK, given the very high costs involved.

    3. Setting up a high end fab plant would "not get much change out of $20B".

So who are these British chip company execs and where are their factories (assuming they actually have any)? And what do these execs do all day?

    Nose Candy?

Quote: "....authors of the report suggest the creation of a significant sized investment fund...."

    No s**t Sherolock!!!

TMSC is building five (seven?) fabs in Arizona......price tag around $100 billion (note billion with a "b")

Intel is building one (two?) fabs in Ohio....price tag around $20 billion (note billion with a "b")

Yup......the UK is planning a "world leading" role in the semiconductor business......with maybe £100 million (note million with an "m")

Fantasy.......or just too much nose candy???

    1. Ah well

      Re: Nose Candy?

Why is the UK taxpayer expected to cough up money for these corporates who will shift any benefit abroad?

Corporate welfare.. Let the corporates go to a chip bank and get some donated chips there.
