back to article Microsoft Fabric promises to tear into the enterprise analytics patchwork

A relative newcomer to the enterprise data and analytics world, Microsoft didn't hold back when it launched its Fabric platform last month. Against companies like SAS and Teradata – with more than 95 years of history between them – the Redmond software giant, which only launched its Synapse data warehouse in 2019, promised to …

promised to address "every aspect of an organization's analytics needs"

My God, so begins the next 20 years of expensive, hugely complex and resource gobbling data warehouse projects so that companies can do lots of analytics work on mountains of data to learn things that someone somewhere in the company probably knew anyway.

I predict that most of what gets made out of Microsoft Fabric will probably be pants.

What he said... + I'm just going through all this at the mo and the key drivers for me are A) business focused data and B) moving fast.

MS will not offer either of these things anytime this side of eternity and I've been an VS bod for years. MS is just too BT these days.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

This is nothing but jiggery-pokery make-work for profit.

    New to analytics?

You sure about that? SSRS is ancient. SSAS has been around for a similar time. I'm sure SQL Server counts too - columnstore and in-memory have been around for 10 years. At a stretch, MS Access had a report writer in the late 90s.

    It's always crap

    Been here before.

We support everything! We can read all the formats! We talk to all the APIs! We read all the files! We can plot all the stuffs exactly how you want!

Never actually works. All the connectors and thingies are offered in the UI ... but they're always broken. The salesman will tell you "Oh they're coming in the next release." They never arrive.

Also the graphing is always total crap and fails as soon as you do something that's not in the salesman's demo.

    Fucking vapourware, I tell ya.

Like the support for OpenOffice file formats? I remember opening a Calc file in Excel, only to discover that Excel replaced all the formulas with their present values. Totally nonfunctional. Yet OpenOffice had no trouble reading Excel files...

(At home I use LibreOffice exclusively, and just have to remember to save in MS formats if sending files to others. LO is compatible with others; MS isn't.)
