back to article G7 nations admit they're nowhere on AI regulation

A weekend of high-level diplomatic meetings has seen the G7 and the Quad blocs prioritize regulation of AI, cyber security, supply chains for critical minerals, and open radio access networks. AI was high on the agenda at the G7 meeting, where leaders called for the adoption of governance standards. "We recognize that, while …

They are probably more focused on how they can monetize it.

I wouldn't be surprised if either:

    1) AI "tax" is introduced. All goods partially developed using AI generation incurs an additional tax. Possibly enforced by 2)

    2) Banning individuals from hosting their own AI backend (for "safety"), instead subscription to an approved "tech leader" is mandatory

That won't go anywhere, as everybody will be arguing about who gets to lead and why.

Personally, the only rule that I want to see burned into lawbooks is that if you are "judged" in any way by an AI that can have a potentially adverse effect on your life, you have the right to all data collected that made that decision happen, and your legal representation has the right to inspect the AI source code and "environment", that is to say, what it has gleaned from the training data.

My fear isn't that AI will rule the world, or turn up shoehorned into a load of IoT shit. My fear is that AI will be used to make important decisions (bank loan acceptance through to police identity matching) and it will be an opaque system with a decision that people treat as some sort of gospel truth with zero accountability. Basically passing the buck to a machine that can't be reasoned with, nor explained how exactly it arrives at any particular result. "Computer says NO...".

Yes, this is a problem and almost guaranteed to happen. Credit checks are already pretty opaque and I know China has a complex algorithm (lets use the buzzword "AI") to work out citizen "quality" based on absurd things like social media friends and purchase history. This one is even more opaque for "national security" nonsense.

    Red tape

This is all about Microsoft using gov red tape to hamstring the competition.

    Missing a trick

Why not get AI to write the AI regulations?

    Very clever, I'm sure.

Just out of interest, has there ever been an occasion in history where panicking world governments attempting to stuff the genie back into the bottle has actually accomplished anything?

Sitting there doing nothing and letting our corporate overlords bring about a Snow Crash-style anarcho-capitalism future doesn't sound very appealing either.
