Please, just make it stop
Haven't we reached peak Normal-Thing-but-with-AI-Twist news stories yet?
Silly me - There's still months and months to go before that "novelty" wears off.
With the rise of ChatGPT, Bing Chat, and Google's Bard, generative AI is seemingly inescapable, and it will soon power many of the ads you see on the internet. Google plans to roll out generative AI tools to its advertising platform that will reportedly auto-generate ads from customer's marketing materials and by doing so …
To get over it, associate AI with paedophilia and other crime.
Make it "known" that the LLMs are generating perfect texts for grooming and phishing. The image generators are only good at making explicit imagery. Style the message as: Only perverts use AI because AI is the pervert.
That'll shorten the attractive timespan.
There is some truth in there, but you forgot the most important financial aspect: Decision-makers have been told there is money to be made with AI, beautiful, juicy money, so even if AI was deadly they would still push it as strongly as they can. Think of the children? That's just a worn-out pretext politicians use when they have no other halfway rational-sounding excuse, in this case somebody please think of the shareholders!
On the advertising note, this conversation with ChatGPT* amused me:
ChatGPT: can you write me a marketing message for AI in cybersecurity using unrealistic hyperbole?
Sure thing! "Introducing the ultimate solution in cybersecurity: AI! With our revolutionary artificial intelligence technology, your data will be completely impenetrable to hackers. No longer will you have to worry about cyber attacks or data breaches. Our AI will anticipate and prevent any threats before they even happen, making your online presence completely bulletproof. Plus, our AI is constantly learning and adapting, so it will only get better and better at protecting you. Don't risk your security with outdated, manual methods - upgrade to AI with us today and experience true cybersecurity nirvana!"
These things know what hyperbole is *if* you ask. Scope for echoes of how you get code generation with no upfront commentary on vulnerabilities here?
(* yes, I know that's the other one)
so, on top of ad-brokering and ad-displaying and ad-tracking business, they're planning to enter the ad-making business? Makes sense. Oh, the irony, I wished all those ad-people lose their jobs and throw themselves out of the window and eternal bliss, etc. I might yet get my wish, but not the eternal bliss, quite the opposite....
Artificial intelligence, in the form in which you know it — ChatGPT, was developed primarily as an advertising system; where any text is understood as an ad and is connected to others by their meaning. For example, an answer attached to a search query.
So there's no point in grumbling: a new kind of advertising is emerging!
Companies often screw up with adverts, and very amusing it can be. Now AI can do that for them. Especially AI that was trained on the net in general and 4chan in particular.
I'm all for this. Wealthy companies stupid enough to use AI, delivering hilarious snafus for us to enjoy. Makes up for the sh*tshow that life has become over the last 6 years.
Someone (or maybe more like the whole BOD) has been drinking the Ad agency koolaid.
When I see ads for anything I add that company to the 'Avoid at all costs, do not buy from, do not even look at their webpage' list.
Some who are persistent get blocked at my firewall.
Google.com is one of those. Sadly more and mode dumbass web developers think that it is cool to include Captcha and usually Google ones so I have a script that unblocks it and another one that turns on the block again.
May all ad agencies die a slow and painful death.
Yours,
Grumpy old Fart,
Builth Wells
Google plans to roll out generative AI tools to its advertising platform that will reportedly auto-generate ads from customer's marketing materials and by doing so unlock "a world of creativity," regurgitate the same old shit as in every previous campaign, but without having to pay an advertising agency.
