back to article Italy will say ciao to ChatGPT ban if OpenAI does indeed think of the children

Italy's privacy watchdog will lift the country's ban on ChatGPT if OpenAI agrees to enforce rules protecting minors and users' personal data by April 30, it announced on Wednesday.  The Guarantor for the Protection of Personal Data (GPDP) announced it had blocked access to ChatGPT to impose a "temporary limitation of the …

    Misdirection!! Lawmakers "doing something"........

    Remember GDPR? You know....."explicit consent"......

Yup.....1.6 million personal medical records handed over by the Royal Free Trust to Google/DeepMind.

Not one person provided the consent required by law.......and no enforcement of GDPR and no fines or other penalties.

And that's one egregious lawbreaking event that we know about!

....and then there's the standing joke called "age verification".......

Yup....."we're dong something"....."think of the children".......lawmaking as misdirection!!! Again!!!

GDPR predates ChatGPT, so it can hardly be a surprise that they have to comply with this and it should have been built in at the planning stage.

And the UK's watchdog does seem very lax, compared with many other EU countries, when it comes to infringement.

Yet Italy has banned ChatGPT, has said it won't lift the ban unless they get compliance, has threatened fines if they don't engage on the issues.

It seems your ultra-cynicism is refuted by evidenced facts.

...and the ban it is going to be enforced how? (unless there are plans for the great firewall of Italy).

Initial reports said they had "blocked" the site but I have no idea how, not my field of expertise. I would imagine they used DNS redirection or whatever is used to ban prohibited and proscribed sites elsewhere.

@Jason Bloomberg "Yet Italy has banned ChatGPT, has said it won't lift the ban unless they get compliance"

Compliance to their demands not compliance to GDPR. Italy's GPDP banned ChatGPT and launched an investigation on the grounds it may violate GDPR. The GPDP still don't know if ChatGPT complies with GPDR or compliance with their demands means compliance with GPDR.

Is the investigation even finished yet? They have not published the results, results that would justify the ban by identifying how ChatGPT is in non compliance with GDPR, and the measures that would need to be implemented to achieve compliance.

So this does look a lot like "Misdirection!! Lawmakers "doing something".

If ChatGPT were to think of Italian children...

..it'd probably suggest a couple of hours at Gas Mark 4, a light drizzle of olive oil and serving with a tomato and mushroom sauce, topped with grated parmesan and rocket on the side.

Be careful what you ask for...
