back to article Of course Facebook will monetize an ad-generating AI

Meta is building a generative AI system capable of churning out online ads to order and will charge businesses to use it, according to chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth. Machine learning models that can emit fancy images, text, and videos from human-written descriptions are gaining widespread traction right now. Popular …

It is not easy to start advertising using OpenAI technology, as Facebook would need to spend years and years. For annotation alone thousands should be hired and a lot of time is required. At best, Facebook will have something similar to what OpenAI and Microsoft already have in two or three years. Zuckerberg's motivation is clear: Facebook's stocks are plummeting and will collapse the moment Microsoft starts selling its AI advertising.

"It is not easy to start advertising using OpenAI technology, as Facebook would need to spend years and years."

Why? They have all the material for teaching it on hand, for free, full access. It won't take more than weeks once they get it running and it's limited only by cpu/disk power they bother to let it use.

By "annotation" you need *manually* doing something? That won't happen: Either is fully automated or it doesn't happen.

I do agree on motivation, but there's no way they'll waste years to do something manually.

    What a revolutionary technology

Before, ad companies had to do the hard work of making multiple ad campaigns themselves. Now they can pay Meta a fee to make all the ad campaigns for them, and shove more of them in front of our eyes.

Glad I don't use Facebook. Or Instagram. Or Whatsapp. Or an Oculus.

These AI engines steal from other people's work. So won't you land up generating an ad with fancy fonts that looks like you're plugging a competitor's product?

    At last a use case!

It's beginning to look like these systems are only any good for replacing advertisers and lawyers.

Hang on, did I just discover an upside to all this?

So you'd prefer a world where all advertisers are grouped together in 1 single point of attack failure? Blasphemous capitalist !

Re: At last a use case!

AI technology was originally developed for advertising purposes, that was the idea. This technology was initially aimed at finding one-three words that would contextually answer the question asked, so that it would be possible to attach the same by sense, contexrually related advertising.

This is the practical implementation of the task set by NIST TREC QA, during which the the technology was born.

Once AI has put everyone out of work, I'm curious who they're going to sell their crud to. Other AIs?
