back to article B-List celebs including Lindsay Lohan fined after crypto shill probe

Eight very B-list celebrities have agreed to cough up fines after being accused of shilling a cryptocurrency without disclosing they were paid to do so, while the chap who apparently paid them has been charged with fraud. That chap is named Justin Sun. He's the owner of Tron Foundation Limited, BitTorrent Foundation Ltd, and …

I'm following Dabbsy over on Autosaveisforwimps... I don't think he would come back, El Reg is no longer El Reg, but Reg.com. I get the feeling that the disappearance of Paris in the icons and Dabbsy's exit come from a PC directive, you know, make it SFW. And we know that Dabbsy is anything but PC in his rantings.

I miss the post pub nosh, and the breakie after the pub! I guess that Reg.com needs the space for webinars and such frippery, not to be confused with Robert Fripp.

    WTF?

Lindsay Lohan has millions of followers ?

Two would already be a lot. Millions ? Unthinkable.

In any case, I see she's still riding the elevator down, down, down . . .

Re: Lindsay Lohan has millions of followers ?

Millions of followers really isn't unusually big in the worldwide scheme of things, especially as many are probably late millennials who were fans in her 2000s heyday and getting nostalgic for their childhoods. If she was still at the peak of her fame in today's social media environment, she'd conservatively be (certainly) well into the seven and probably eight figures.

FWIW, you can tell that the front page thumbnail image of her- presumably taken around the peak of that 2000s fame then early infamy- is pretty old now from the fact that everyone is shoving their cheap digital compact cameras (with regulation 2000s sprayed silver finish) in her face, rather than their smartphones.

    4. Michael Strorm Silver badge

      Re: B list?

I don't think describing Lohan as "B-list" is overly disrespectful, since she's nowhere near her peak popularity of 15-20 years ago and only really still famous at all off the back of that.

It'd be more disrespectful to describe her, on that basis, as a "has-been".

(BTW, just thinking... if someone belongs to the B list, does that make them a BLister?)

    5. jollyboyspecial

      Re: B list?

These people are only B list if you divide celebrities into A and B lists.

Sure celebrity is fleeting and right now Paul could possibly be considered to be borderline B list, but not for long I'm sure. As for the rest I think you're looking at anywhere between D and Z.

Re: I can't wait till they hammer Brady and Matt Damon.

I know at least one of those was in an FTX advertisement, in which case they probably followed the rules which basically say that you can hire any actor to say that your company is great, but making them hide information as was done here is the problem. If the actor just read lines that the company wrote, then the company can be at fault for the lines but the actor isn't expected to check their legality, and if the company had the actor read the required lines while still conducting fraud elsewhere, then the actor's definitely not at fault for what the company did. I don't know if both of them did that or if the other one did something different, so this wouldn't always apply.

    Shouldn't this be the rule?

When being interviewed about their role in a movie actors should have to state that they are being paid to say how much they respect the director.

On the red carpet they should say they are wearing TKmax and that they're being paid to

    1. heyrick Silver badge

Re: Shouldn't this be the rule?

If a "celebrity" (note the scare quotes) is shilling something, it's reasonable to assume they're being paid to do so.

But if they are on a movie review show on the non-commercial BBC then we must assume they are telling the truth about how great their upcoming movie is and have no financial interest

    Are people that desperate?

If it were Warren Buffet shilling for a particular crypto, I might take notice, but Kendra Lust? A guy that beats people up for a living? A rapper (who might might be assassinated or in jail next week)? I'm not even going to buy a watch that some cinema star is being paid to endorse. What do they know about watches other than the price? If Jay Leno were to come out and endorse a car, I'd be all ears. Yeah, he was a talk show host and still does stand-up, but he's very well known for his car collection and extensive knowledge on the subject. Somehow I doubt that any sum of money would be enough if he didn't honestly think the car was a gooder.

    Doesn't surprise me....

....seeing Jake Paul on that list. Him and his brother are the low lifes of the Internet. But then we can blame YouTube as well for never banning both.

Jake Paul's brother Logan went to Aokigahara forest in Japan purely for the views. Wearing a stupid hat & was hoping they'd run into a suicide. And they did and he filmed it and it stayed on YouTube for a while making him and YouTube quite a bit of money in ad revenue. Anyone else would of been banned but as he made them lots of money with his channel, the video just got removed and he was allowed to carry on.

The two brothers are fucking awful.
