only a few months ago we were hearing about everything being delayed because of a shortage of chips.

Probably the wrong sort of chips ...

How about this chipmaker going to the car companies and saying 'How can we help you'? but they won't. They'll just vote with their feet and move to Europe.

There are still shortages of chips. Especially from ST.

The thing is that many businesses that used them are no longer trading, because they were not able to keep the lights on without being able to make their products for so long.

Depending on how they managed their shutdown they are either not going to come back or it will take a long time to return to their former operational readiness.

You also need to take into account that supply chains have been heavily disrupted and so it will take time to rebuild them and also gain trust back.

Now there are too many ?

Too many of some, not enough of others. And products are held up by the ones in short supply.

Power electronics, microcontrollers, glue logic, that sort of thing, if not available, hold up shipping end products no matter how healthy the supply of the main processors etc.

It's something the media should be better at, making clear what kinds of components are and aren't available. It's something we're trying to be better at.

    Not indicative

One small company's lack of forecast planning in a small sector (RF) does not mean the semiconductor industry is falling off the cliff.
