back to article Cash-strapped Intel looks for $3B in savings to pursue '5 nodes in 4 years' dream

Intel is looking to balance investments in technology with cost cutting to offset reduced revenue as it prepares to introduce a number of new production nodes over the next few years. The Santa Clara chip giant reported a $700 million net loss for the fourth quarter of its 2022 financial year, and saw revenues drop 32 percent …

    Product

Intel does not have a product, only legacy technology that has been reheated for how long now?

So what do they need nodes for?

It's like trying to buy a premium domain name, before having a service to put behind it.

First Intel should make a product that could compete with M2, perhaps launch it with TSMC and then think about their own nodes.

Intel engineers have gone bonkers, if they think a new shiny node is all they need to continue.

Sure, new node may get them that extra few %, but it will only prolong the agony.

I did note the ‘empty shells’ comment.

I hope they aren’t using the CHIPS money to build some sheds… with nothing in. They’ll be back for more free money when it come to fit-out time.

Article quote, "There are investments 'necessary to drive five nodes in four years' which Intel absolutely does not want to touch, David Zinsner [Intel CFO] said"

Should Pat Gelsinger fail to drive this highly ambitious programme of '5 in 4', Gelsinger has a tried-and-tested node Intel can always fall back upon – the cash cow that is 14++++++++++ nm.

[The automotive sector still use 65/55nm, so it's only a matter of time till they'll migrate to Intel's 14+ⁿ nm. So no problemo, Gelsinger, should you fail in delivering '5 in 4', Intel will still be relevant, honest.]

Maybe its me, but given how well the bonus payments for past leadership went, why dont they double up and pay their leaders even more for more success.
