back to article Europe, America fear Twitter job cuts mean it can't protect users

It turns out that, when you buy the internet's "town square" and fire most of the people who run it, governments on both sides of the pond want to have a talk with you about user safety and security. That's what Elon Musk has been learning since buying Twitter last year and laying off more than half the company's staff - at …

    Unsurprising

...unfortunately, as it's hard to read it as anything but political...

That phrase may well be inscribed on America's headstone.

A fair proportion of it's ruling class seem to want power for power's sake and have no interest in running the joint for the benefit of the inhabitants.

I can't see it ending well, but I'm old so with any luck I'll be dead when the shooting starts.

    Europe makes the rules

First off, NO, He will not protect you from russian and chinese and saudi trolls. MUSK IS WORKING FOR THEM. LMAO. Have any of you actually taken a look at what's happening on twits? It's all russian propaganda at this point. It's intentional. They guy is a putinesta Murdoch partner, who bought the damn thing with saudi money that was put into a kushner money fund for crying out loud. It's a kushner smear propaganda machine. It's what twit IS now. It's used for kushner smear campaigns, and russian lies. He's part of THE CULT. Full blown truther.

Secondly, His lawyer flat out stated the FTC won't touch him because he launches their SATs. He has no interest in working with the FTC AT ALL.

Europe, on the other hand, can keep him in check. America often conforms to European laws in these matters. The EU tends to set the standards.

"It's all russian propaganda at this point."

Translation: I read something that goes against my worldview and my only way of coping with the concept that I'm not 200% right on everything is to blame the russians.

Twitter was a cesspool of CSE and other junk prior and no-one in govt cared prior to the takeover. Now suddenly it is a problem... odd that.

    Weaponization of the Federal Government

So this Select Committee is *against* said "weaponization"? Paint me very confused. I was under the impression that the sort of people who would fill a report with stuff like:

    > repeated cries in the report of how "the left" is the cause of Twitter losing advertising dollars

were the ones who *really* like weapons of all shapes and sizes.

Oh, is it because this time the "weapon" is pointing *at* one of their own?

You should have realised by now that any time these people claim their oponents are doing something and that it is wrong they are actually looking in a mirror and talking about themselves.

    EU interference

I think the EU should just shut the heck up and keep their nose out of our businesses. What right do they have ant way. They'll change their tune if all of EU's twitters customers start raging on the EU to leave twitter alone.

The govts are scared that twitter isn't an extension of their propaganda machine any more. Authoritarian governments such as the current US and EU cannot survive unless they control the narrative and ensure that the masses remain as NPCs at their control.
