back to article Phở no! Vietnam's last working submarine cable glitches out

Vietnam's connection to the internet has become even more tenuous after a fifth submarine cable's service degraded, meaning all maritime links are now compromised. As The Register reported on February 21, four of the five cables connecting Vietnam to the world either stopped working or were delivering a degraded service. …

We learn that Vietnam's undersea cable system is old, decrepit, in need of renewal and mainly controlled by the military.

The USA denies anything to do with it.

Connection issues started after new year.

It was after new year that the connection really started to be a problem, was closer to Tet in Feb. As it is mobile seems to get a better connection than cable. But using an apartments WiFi when everyone comes home is a nightmare because they tend to share one line between the apartments.

"?It was after new year that the connection really started to be a problem" No. it has been a problem for a long time but El Reg seems to be in thrall to QAnon / MTG type hysteria.

I have no idea why you dragged QAnon and MTG into this, But I can assure you the connection has not been that bad in Vietnam in the past few years. In fact a lot better than my connection was in the UK in both mobile and househol It has however downgraded severly in the past few week, juist after new year as it were.

" I can assure you the connection has not been that bad in Vietnam in the past few years." Funny that the government says the opposite isn't it . As does the World Bank and all neutral parties.

"Vietnam's undersea cable system is old, decrepit, in need of renewal."

Vietnam's submarine fiber optic cables break about 10 times a year"

"According to the August 2021 report of the World Bank, when compared with 12 countries with similar conditions, Vietnam's Internet connection belongs to the group that needs to improve quality and speed if it wants to succeed in the digital economy."

"The SMW3 cable is outdated and going to be decommissioned, "

It is also mainly controlled by the military.

Also, the subject is undersea cables not specifically internet connections.

"I have no idea why you dragged QAnon and MTG into this" As your connections to the real world are obviously degraded I suggest you try and keep up.

"a lot better than my connection was in the UK in both mobile and househol" LOL. You were saying about QAnon?

      Re: Once is happenstance

Possibly although it's possible that degraded perf on the last cable is just down to the entire countries' connectivity coming through it...

"the entire countries' connectivity coming through it..." and the entire country's cable system being crap.

Why has ElReg got a hard on for Nam vs PRC?

Why not tell the truth, i.e. their systems are old and decrepit?

But I suppose it keeps the QAnon types happy.

There are three cable landing sites in Vietnam, and six in-service submarine cable systems connecting Vietnam, two new cables including SJC2 and ADC are under construction.

Dear downvoters, I am citing government and industry sources rather than personal, bigoted opinions. That is why I mentioned keeping "the QAnon types happy."

Why not try and accept the facts for a change. I remember when AGW denial was a thing and "patriotic" conspiracy theorists such as Steven Goddard held forth. Seems they are returning.
