back to article GPT-4 could pop up in Bing, as Google races to build chatbot search products

Microsoft will reportedly integrate OpenAI's upcoming large language model GPT-4 into the Bing search engine over the next few weeks, as Google scrambles to test rival AI products, fearing it could lose its dominant position in online search.  Text-generation models have evolved from being able to autocomplete text to being …

    Fools errand

People don't need their search results dressed up as a fake conversation. People need accurate and relevant search results. Google et al have been actively stripping utility out of their search engines to drive traffic to paid search and force users to scroll past as much garbage as possible. GPTs 1 to infinity won't fix that.

Worse, if they put it in charge of the output answers and results, it will happily feed garbage dressed up as content in place of actual information. This will in the fullness of time, literally kill people.

And if it used to improve interpretation of the users intent in the search box, why have they intentionally removed the existing and more efficient tools like "-" to exclude results, and the old advanced search tools? The answer was it cost more to process and made them less money.

In reality, this will likely amount to more buzzwordy AI bullshit that won't make search results any better, won't work reliably, and only exists to deflect peoples attention from a possible alternative.

I would say that they also don't need their search results expressed as plausible but wrong opinion rather than objective fact.

Well, it seems that plenty of people do, in fact*, want plausible but wrong, but the species as a whole is doomed if that's what we get by default.

In things that is not wanted or needed

Here is a good example of something that was not asked for, serves no purpose and is not going to be used.

      Meh

Re: In things that is not wanted or needed

On the contrary, if it can give correct answers sufficiently frequently, I think it will get used quite a lot. That's a big "if," but not an insurmountable one, I should think.

Define correct? TBH I don't think search is going to be where this makes a difference. Google has dominance, particularly on mobile devices, and overcoming the inertia necessary to change this will take more than a conversational interface.

    As a service

The best description of Chat-GPT I have encountered thus far is "mansplaining as a service." It generates plausible sounding yet baseless lectures on any topic with unflagging confidence in its own correctness, without concern, regard, or even awareness of the expertise of its audience, much less its own ignorance.

In short, it's a lot like many of the "conversations" here.

I did ask it if it considers itself to be a mansplainer. It mansplained that it was not

Knowing Microsoft, just waiting to see how they shoot themselves in the foot with this. Given that they also want to charge for the full version, methinks what they tack on to Bing will be severely hobbled and munged up.

Forewarned is not necessarily forearmed in these peculiarly specific kind of cases

If you think AI is just a passing fad with no real power to do anything spectacularly meaningful and disruptive, either creatively or destructively .... and they will always be the choices open to them/it ..... you are going to be overwhelmingly surprised by what it is doing, and even more worried or excited by what it can do whenever you realise that there is nothing practical or virtual available to halt and prevent its long march into arenas of great human concern in which it does not fail to demonstrate its absolute dominant pre-eminent position.

And that is not just an alien view, for there be struggling Western powers already fearing that be their future fate .......

Meanwhile, new military capabilities, enabled by artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies, the development of creative ways to apply them and intensifying geopolitical rivalries are changing the character of war. ....... https://www.nationaldefensemagazine.org/articles/2023/2/2/emerging-offset-x--strategy-addresses--chinese-threat

And Eric Schmidt, American businessman and software engineer who was the CEO of Google from 2001 to 2011, executive chairman of Google from 2011 to 2015, executive chairman of Alphabet Inc. from 2015 to 2017, and Technical Advisor at Alphabet from 2017 to 2020, and now a Pentagon warhawk scaremongerer in chief type bod, apparently also thinks so and is good enough to share it with y’all to prepare you for whatever is going to befall you ............ https://www.scsp.ai/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Defense-Panel-IPR.pdf

It’s a crazy world, aint it. :-) ..... and if you're not in, you can't win win
