Re: Polish for Windows Spotlight and ...
OK, but will my colleague from Gdansk now find it easier to use? :-)
Microsoft is working on new looks for the Windows Spotlight feature and redesigns for the graphics settings page as part of its latest Windows 11 Preview build. At the same time, the company is introducing tabs in the Windows Notepad tool to developers in its Windows Insider Dev Channel group. Microsoft uses the Windows …
OneNote is OK for taking notes (anyone found Search & Replace, yet?), including formatted text, image, tables, etc. Also, it has the nice feature of being able to write pen-based notes by hand (even does some form of "convert handwriting to text").
Notepad is a quick & dirty program for pure, unadulterated text files without formatting, for example source code, INIs, etc.
So now Notepad gets tabs! RA, RA, RA... Can't wait to replace my programmers' text editors.
"The treatments for Spotlight will include richer UI around displaying the title and description and learning more information about the image displayed on your desktop via Spotlight,"
Wow! I'm overwhelmed.
But seriously, does M$ not have anything better to do with programmers' time than this? W11 is, IMHO, a step backwards from W10 in terms of the way the UI functions and the overall ease of use. In particular (for me) the inability to move the taskbar away from the bottom of the screen to the left hand side (where it's been on my screen for the last 30+ years) is a complete killer. Other major annoyances are the procedure for changing default apps, for which I have several non-M$ preferred apps.
I've tried it and I've binned it. I'm staying with W10 whilst I can.
I also have W7 and XP machines which M$ would also have me kill but these run mission critical software.
Now I've discovered that MS will try to force me away from the perfectly useable version of Office 2010 that I have to buy a subscription for Office 365. The only reason I use M$ office is for compatability with some of my customers, but this will end in 2 years time when I retire and go full Linux.
I feel I must agree with ComicalEngineer on this point.
In what professional world do changes to the screensaver rank anywhere above the bottom of the hierarchy of importance? Why even mention it?
Of course, the real question needs to be: why is Microsoft releasing new major versions of their operating system yearly? Can't they just fix whatever's wrong and leave it at that? Or are they having that much trouble getting it right?

Another application getting tabs because the taskbar is completely and utterly unusable now.
It is a crying shame that I can only gift you one upvote for that comment. Then again it’s a crying shame that the taskbar is in such a seriously lamentable state in Windows 11.

"The latest Windows 11 Preview Build, 25281, puts a focus on the Spotlight function – the rotating photos that are downloaded from Bing and displayed when the screen is locked on the system – with the goal of delivering more information on what is in the picture."
Almost literally shuffling deckchairs.
