back to article Russian criminals can't wait to hop over OpenAI's fence, use ChatGPT for evil

Cybercriminals are famously fast adopters of new tools for nefarious purposes, and ChatGPT is no different in that regard.  However, its adoption by miscreants has happened "even faster than we expected," according to Sergey Shykevich, threat intelligence group manager at Check Point. The security shop's research team said it …

    Russia, and only Russia?

The last time I checked, there were plenty of miscreants all over the world.

    East, West, North and South

Does mentioning Russia encourage more advertisers? Legit question

I mean, it's not as if you're writing these stories with the aim of, not getting paid

I too am outraged they only mentioned Check Point & CyberArk Labs. There are plenty of Israeli cyber-security companies east, west, north and south that will probably be all over this area of research, eventually. Why do the ones ahead of the curve who bothered to publish their work get the limelight?! It's pure corruption or something or whatever!

Yes, only Russians. Actually, probably only Putin himself. That's why he asked Edward Snowden to come to Russia with all of NSA's secrets. Who didn't do cyber hacking since it was done by the good guys.

See, life's easy for some people.

Well as far as I'm concerned, In this context, Russia = CIA/NSA/FBI/MI6!

    We're doomed

I haven't really played with ChatGPT so I don't know if it is really an advance or just a lot of hype, but open source AI software is going to be a real problem for scams because it'll make them harder and harder to notice even for those of us with a lot of experience.

Imagine an AI that learns from its mistakes performing social engineering on a company's employees. Using deepfake videos it could even do a video call, without any language/culture barrier issues that some schlub a scammer hires to do that job.

This could be the start of a new wave of cybercrime, where even those of us who believe we are too smart/experienced/jaded/etc. to ever be fooled might see ourselves fooled.

I think the net impact will be your spam/phishing mails, texts, messages etc will be better spelt and grammatically correct (probably better than a live human native speaker)… however content and narrative may feel wrong/not make sense.

      Watch out!!

Imagine an AI that learns from its mistakes

I've read an interesting analysis about this (may-be here on ElReg in a comment) that suggested that since the current AI learns from the Internet, and then outputs on the Internet, it might feed its learning mechanism on itself, creating a positive feedback loop, which is unstable. So all this hype is short-lived and doomed to fail : it will sort-of work only as long as humans – involuntarily – feed it.

Which doesn't mean it can't bring havoc during the time of its – useless – existence

    Super criminal

So humans created Super Hacker Bot 9000. Now what? RoboCop 9000? run by Internationaal Security Management Applied Services Haliburton - or I SMASH for short?

Why do people always have to do the worst thing with technology,,,,,,

I'll bet $5, someone is asking it to make a new human virus, and it won't say no.

Sanitised, off-internet machines have so many uses.

TF for the long legacy of stuff that doesn't need it. Often more fun to use too.

Just because you can do something,

    Doesn't mean you should.

We should all adhere to the sage advice from the Orange Catholic Bible!

"Thou shall not create a machine in the image of the human mind!"
