An anti-government protest by truckers in Canada has been called off following "multiple security breaches," according to organizers, who also cited "personal character attacks," as a reason for the withdrawal. Canada Unity, one of the groups that organized last year's so-called Freedom Convoy - during which truckers and …

It's Canada. The native population show up for almost everything. Great reason for a drum circle.

Now, I don't agree with the crap the truckers put out, but I do support their right to free speech. The ability to intimidate people to silence is what Snowden warned us about. Silencing critics is a slippery slope and not just for governments.

The only thing they are "unified" by here in Canada is their hatred of Trudeau; 99% of the protestors are Conservative voters who still can't accept that they lost the last election. Anger and hatred may "unify" people, but it isn't a unity I want to see in my nation of Canada.

      Attacking Science

The entire point of the 'Freedom' Convoy was that vaccines are more dangerous than COVID-19. That's a direct attack on science, because science says that unvaccinated people died more than 10 to 1 from COVID compared to vaccinated people. Everyone getting vaccinated is a 100% societal good and personal good - everyone wins, and might actually stop COVID, like Polio. We'll never know, because the anti-vaxxers mean we can never reach enough immunity.

Unfortunately, Canada imported America's MAGA dumbf#$@ery, like they're a US colony, and couched this as 'mah freedumbs'. The majority of Canadians who believe this twaddle are old uneducated white people who also are very scared of the brown people overtaking them and think they need to be dealt with. You could easily see this in the Freedumb Convoy videos. You had a few token First Nations who like protesting things, but it's mostly just old uneducated white people screeing about Bill Gates microchips in the vaccines.

It was old uneducated white people mounting a show of solidarity against educated people and brown people who threaten their livelihoods.

Ah, the 'everyone else is wrong cos they are thickos' argument.

The polio vaccine actually works at stopping people getting polio and doesn't need to be boosted every 6 months. All the actual evidence about the covid vaccine is you can still get it, can still spread it and it might help you not get as sick.

That is misinformation unless backed up by some citation.

Science works by challenging a hypothesis. You have a claim, try your hardest to disprove it, if you can’t then it’s likely true.

Build credibility in your work by detailing what you did and have others repeat your work and check they have the same outcomes and conclusions.

    WTF?

    Superspreader? Give me a break.

"as we enter year three of the COVID-19 pandemic, the convoy may well also be about bringing people together for yet another superspreader event."

Seriously, Jessica? Some random folks are coordinating to drive their semi's around in Winnipeg in a symbolic (mostly useless) protest and you feel the need to bring out one of the fear-porn tropes from 2020 to attempt to justify your dislike of anyone questioning the government? (President Xi is nodding in approval for you, by the way.) Where were your tirades about superspreader events going into Christmas or gatherings for the World Cup? I must have missed the torrential wave of COVID hospitalizations overwhelming the NHS in the weeks following the Queen's burial or England's loss in the Cup. I'd wager more called in hung over than ever did with COVID.

The only thing that spreads faster than the COVID virus or conspiracy theories is your kind of mob group-think. Science is fundamentally about questioning assumptions. Bullies shut that down.

So what of it? It's their decision to not get a jab and to commingle. Freedom of expression and choice is a hallmark of liberal western democracies. Although I've had three jabs, I'm not one force others to do the same. I'll choose when/whether to mask and with whom to socialize. The totalitarians are those who take away that choice.

True, but that doesn't change the fact that having a large number of unvaccinated people getting together is likely to result in a rather astounding number of new infections, hence the "superspreader" label.

Re: Superspreader? Give me a break.

comments of anti-vaxxers, or those who only reject _mandatory_ jabs, usually get downvoted to hell... not sure why people cannot try to believe that vax is more of protecting people against serious symptoms and less of against transmission (at least this is said by some of the medical doctors here in hong kong).

so, yes, anyone can jab how many times they want to be, well, protected and since it's more of protecting yourself, it's seems a bit far-fetched to force other people to get the jab to... protect themself?

it's seems like in a cold day you wear warm clothes to protecting you against catching flu or whatever, and then you make illegal for people to wear their short sleeve clothes to get outside.

this sort of logic applies equally to the vaccine pass... if you have got enough jabs and you believe the jab works as advertised, you should be less worrisome of getting covid and how come the government need the vax pass to protect... the vaxxed?

anyway, hopefully covid is almost over and both the vaxxed and un-vaxxed can enjoy life together, under the same sky.

But now we have overloaded hospitals and people very ill or dead due to the lockdowns stopping pretty much all routine medical care. And lets not forget the unexplained excess deaths for unknown reasons.

We will never know if the reduction in hospitalisations was due to the vaxx or simply due to covid mutating into a less serious version combined with natural immunity. Numbers were very skewed in the USA where there were financial incentives to put people into ICU.

    Antivaxxers out in force

I guess to the surprise of no one, it seems the comment section has been taken over by the karen convoy so they can drown out actual conversations.

Drowning discourse with lies and misinformation is the only way for these people to approximate legitimacy. They are driven by conspiracy theories, and their end goal is to embrace the worst that the fascist alt-right has to offer.

The hilarious/sad part is that these people have so little introspection (or knowledge of history) that they will never realize that they are the modern day equivalent of pre-nazi germany SS soldiers.

They disrupted a major city and tortured (yes you assholes, you TORTURED them, despite your pathetic spin attempts) for almost a month. They used their own children as god damned human shields. These people are genuinely psychotic. A lot of these bastards either aren't even Canadian, or are at the bottom of the idiot curve because they keep citing US regulations.

The real reason they aren't going to Ottawa is that the citizens now know that Ottawa gov and Ontario gov will _not_ protect them, which means a whole lot of people are going to take the law into their own hands if they try to pull a stunt like this again.
