back to article China files complaint with WTO against US chip export controls

China is fighting back against Washington's semiconductor wars by filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against US chip export controls, claiming they threaten global supply chains. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in a statement it has filed a trade dispute concerning the measures, and aims to use …

Do as we say not as we do

-> the US government rejected the ruling and said it has no intention of removing the measures

The so-called rules based international order which the USA does not itself obey.

Well, China never has anyway, so what's the diff?

How do you think China even got into the WTO in the first place? That’s right the USA sponsored their membership!

Along with giving China most favored nation trade status.

It caused some friction between the US and its traditional trading partners. None of them viewed China’s entry with enthusiasm.

Down vote away, but unless you are doing so out of mere nationalistic prejudice do be aware that protectionist campaigns like this at best operate to the detriment of BOTH parties, and at worst merely encourage the excluded party to go off and obtain want they want by other means, i.e. the whole exercise is almost always futile and self-defeating.

However, it does offer offended politicians the opportunity to appear to be 'doing something'—and we all know how important that is in the grand scheme of things.

    Victim blaming

China is using Russian playbook. Maybe if they stopped abusing human rights, engaging in genocide and ethnic cleansing, then maybe they wouldn't have been hit with export controls.

Any sane country would want to protect themselves against deranged dictators like Winnie the Pooh or Scumtin.

I'd personally say you don't need to mention human rights and genocide to justify restricting technological exports to China. Their history to industrial espionage, and even just stealing regular-day IP by making cheap no-name knockoffs of just about anything they are subcontracted out to manufacture, shows that they have no regard for anything beyond their own interests and making money.

China will happily steal any development or design they can get their hands on, usually cheapen it up with mediocre to poor-quality components and materials, flood the market, and put the very company who developed the product in the first place out of business.

I see *no* reason that international business espionage needs to be supported in any way; IMHO unless and until China cleans up its act in this regard and at least honors global rules of behaviour, sanctions are completely justified.

And if anyone's in doubt, Big Clive on YouTube entertains himself (and us) by buying crap off AliExpress, disassembling it, engineering the circuit schematic, and showing how poorly done, or even dangerous it is.

A recent one had a "fresh air ionizer" where the little ionizer brushes on the front were directly connected to mains voltage. It also had a random opamp just soldered in, in an attempt to look like a real circuit.

I had a friend try ordering lift chain from China. He ordered 20klb stuff, and the Chinese contact asked if he wanted them labeled 20klb or 40klb!

Look on Amazon, and search for a cheap commodity like an automotive fuel pump. You'll get hundreds of results, all with the exact same product image and alphabet-soup manufacturer names, all sold from China.

We need to protect ourselves from this garbage.

Funnily enough, this isn't a particularly chinese problem.

The REASON strict consumer protection and company liability laws exist in most western countries is because this kind of thing used to be commonplace in them too (and still is in many places)

It's a stage every country goes through

China learned from the best - the USA did exactly the same thing in the 18th, 19th and early-mid 20th centuries

    State-Level Illusory Superiority

Which state leads by example? Neither China or the US seem to be good role models to me. I don't suggest I'm in a better place either.

    Slightly ironic

It was the US that sponsored China’s membership into the WTO.

    Lying abroad for one's country...

these targeted actions relate to national security

Which we all know is a lie, and the WTO will certainly be told that it's a lie.

    Muricans are economic illiterates

The US Semiconductor industry is 1.2% of the US GDP and falling. If you block chip sales, US Companies go out of business. Tech has a very short shelf life. Remember LED light bulbs and how fast they demolished other bulbs made in the USA? China has 98% of the global LED business now. So is Biden Tariffing LED bulbs in order to grow the US business? Solar panels... 97% made in China. Joe's energy policies to cut oil and replace it with solar have no US solar panel makers to move this silly agenda along. So Joe Tariffs Solar Cells and Electric Utilities can't put up solar arrays because they can't get product or the price. Politicians are idiots.

China will win their WTO case. The tired dog of National Security has failed before.

In January China's anti-dumping case was found in favour of China and ruled China Can Place Duties on $645 Million in US Imports.

China has brought a second case which they will also win.

The US is so accustomed to bullying, even when they lose their cases, they cry it ain't fair... the US BULLY transforms into the US Victim. Boo hoo WTOOOO...

Newsflash Murcia... you are not going to stop China Growth. You are only going to turn into the Rope A Dope....

    And it totally is

Are you insinuating that the United States is insincere about its export controls being about preventing China from having the most advanced military equipment?
