back to article Guess which Fortune 500 brands and govt agencies share data with Twitter?

More than 70,000 websites belonging to Fortune 500 brands, government agencies, and universities share consumers' data with Twitter using data tracking code hosted on these other organizations' websites, according to research published on Thursday by Adalytics. Twitter, like most other digital advertising platforms, offers …

    WTF?

Is this again one of those things where your data got stolen even though you never had an account on such a fsckwitted thing as Twitter or Facebook? At least with they current staff complement there is little chance of some foreign thread actor coming along and just taking everybody's data.

      > little chance of some foreign thread actor coming along and just taking everybody's data.

investors who put up more than $100M (IIRC) for Musk to buy Twitter get free access to all the data

Saudi Govt owns 4% of Twitter and Qatar another big chunk

All that data is considered monetizable business assets. Twitter can use it for their own add targeting, but that doesn't realize the full potential of that data that other could be making money from. It is plausible that Twitter sells that data to whomever will pay for it. There are no regulations requiring not selling to foreign entities in ad business, at least that I am aware of.

Twitter could be a threat vector for a foeign government?

"If Twitter itself were to ever suffer a breach, a foreign threat actor could leverage their control over Twitter's code to deface or hack these sensitive government websites," according to the report.

Since Melon Husk owns twitter it appears that the threat is already there. As Pogo once said: We have met the enemy and he is us.

    Google analytics

I have long said that GA & similar should be recognised as falling foul of the GDPR. Users are tracked. Their permission is not asked for thus it is illegal.

Well, some of us do run with scripting disabled, no third party images, cookies etc, various anti track & generally anti nasty browser addons, Pi Hole or similar blocklists... To try & avoid data leakage and "drive by" virus etc. install attempts

.. Biggest hassle is with scripting disabled by default is so many sites do nothing useful as they are so horrendously written that you often just get a blank screen as js all the way down .. a bonus of that is you learn to avoid a lot of shoddy code web sites

"Biggest hassle is with scripting disabled by default is so many sites do nothing useful as they are so horrendously written that you often just get a blank screen as js all the way down"

And when you temporarily allow that specific site's scripts... you see it opens the floodgate for another 10-20-30+ other sites that want to run their script just so you can see the content on the home page of the site you are visiting.

For me personally that triggers an immediate deselection of the temporary allow on that site's scripts. I will find the information from a less 'connected' site or make do without.
