We should have never outsourced our advanced manufacturing to China. We believed that through economic cooperation we could build peace, but that was a very naive thinking. It only enabled imperialists to build up their war chest.

China has a long long ways to go if they want to catch up to Russia and Iran as a terrorist state. So far China is only terrorizing its own people, and a fairly small segment of them at that.

Not that this excuses them, but for all the talk of them being ready to invade Taiwan at any moment it keeps not happening, and they haven't invaded anywhere else nor are they sending Chinese soldiers to fight in the wars of other countries.

Maybe it changes eventually, but for the foreseeable future China's government and leadership is only a threat to its own people.

Been living in Asia for 20 years & China is not popular. Only for economic trade. All their neighbors have a bad history with them.

Sure I guess you could argue same could be said of any super power. I'm just incredibly wary of the echo chamber of absolute power that is the CCP.

Before we went Maximum Cold War on them starting some years ago they were on course to absorb Taiwan. The reason wasn't military, simply that you've got an island that's been culturally and linguistically part of China since for ever that's 100 miles from the mainland that had significant and growing business and personal ties with that mainland. They're not interested in invading Tiawan, they don't need to, but at the same time they would react to a foreign power using the place as a base against them. (See "Cuban Missile Crisis"....)

In a similar vein China doesn't 'do' terrorism. They don't need to. They're about a fifth of the world's population and have significant ex-pat populations in just about every corner of the globe. If the truth be told they're the global Ank-Morpok -- why invade when you can buy (wholesale)? Its us that's having a bit of a problem with causing trouble globally -- instead of quietly getting on with figuring out how to compete with them we're trying to pretend its still the 1930s, Charlie Chan and all. What's frustrating to me is that the more we carry on like this the further we get behind; eventually the only solution is Global Thermonuclear War, something that nobody wins (but, once again, when it comes to picking themselves up from being utterly devastated and building anew the Chinese have had a lot of practice).

Not really, no (though China would like you to believe so). The island speaks both Taiwanese (Hokkien) and Mandarin; but their Mandarin is not quite the same and China's, in the same way that the UK and USA both speak 'English' but not quite the same. They also have different writing (Traditional vs. Simplified characters) which is somewhat analagous to the different spellings in US and UK.

Culturally, there is as much difference as you'd see between European countries, or (again) USA and UK. Similar, but noticeably different if you visit them both.

Taiwan is ALSO "not communist".

A while back I worked with some Taiwanese engineers. They were as competent as any I have seen. They had enthusiasm like you would expect. I have also (indirectly) worked with engineers in China (though only by e-mail). They were quick to deny existence of an obvious problem and would generally not accept any evidence to the contrary, ESPECIALLY not any recommended fix, and their "solution" (months later, without fanfair) was more along the line of "use a bigger part" [rather than fixing the design more elegantly - the overcurrent problem was still there, but if the part is big enough, overload does not accidentally boot the CPU].

I believe the MAIN cultural difference between Taiwan and China is that the LACK of communism allows Taiwan to be more competent and more creative than the "social credit score" fears and "do not draw attention to yourself" mentality of someone living under communism.

America originally created advanced semiconductor technologies, and then the companies involved moved all of the chip production to China, abandoning production in the US and other Asian countries (Malaysia etc) which made them a lot of money and made product creation cheaper too.

Only today (as of writing this), at least one major German paper talks about arguments within the 3-party coalition, because chancellor Scholz and the SPD, as the leading party, are moving blindly along the same road that prior governments did with Russia. Leading them to total dependency on Putin's whims (or, as former chancellor Schröder called him "a crystal-pure democrat" (*)) back then, and the same - arguably even worse - with Xi. Scholz is in China right now, kowtowing to Xi and his court.

The Greens and the Liberal-Democrats are against it, but we'll see how far they are willing to push.

You may not have noticed but China is not the west's friend and our attempts over the last few decades to bring them into the global fold have failed. This is a governing party that genuinely sees tyranical authoritarianism as a positive model to export to other countries. Time for the world's democracies to wake up and see them for what they are. If trade with them wont strengthen us collectively more than them, we shouldnt be doing it. Divided we fall.

China has not invaded a single country since the 50s, why do we hate a country that is more peaceful than we are? We don't have to buy Chinese goods but we do and blame China for our own choices. We blame rich chinese people for buying up properties but the sellers benefited. Aren't we the champion of the free marketplace?

Did China made bad stuff we don't want? If so, why keep buying from them and not make stuff here? All these complaints are nothing but propaganda. If China is left without partners they will build without their own tech without international cooperation.
