back to article Linux kernel 6.1 will contain fixes, features. Useful Rust modules? Not yet

The merge window for contributions to Linux 6.1 is still open and incoming features include Wi-Fi security fixes and hardware tests. Five new vulnerabilities in Linux's Wi-Fi handling have been identified and will be fixed in the forthcoming kernel 6.1. For completists, they are CVE-2022-41674 (kernels up to 5.19), CVE-2022- …

    Intel compiler

The intel compiler was, for decades, an order of magnitude better at optimizing than gcc (but gcc was cross-platform), and LLVM was an academic research project (but LLVM was cross-platform). Intel switching to LLVM is a massive vote on LLVM maturity.

      Re: Intel compiler

Of course the Intel compiler was, basically, cross platform as well: it was the multi-language re-targetable DEC compiler that Intel inherited, along with the development team, as the result of a series of moves and court outcomes.

One wonders if it, and the DEC research park, were ultimately closed because all the old staff reached retirement age.

    Linux remains an unmade bed

Code clowns love unmade beds... they think it shows intelligence when you have to figure out how to take a nap. It wastes time. The absolute biggest failing of Linux is a lack of plug-and-play devices. Loading a wifi adapter can take years off your life. Complexity with no yield. There is no one area where LINUX wins. It is not for Gamers. It is instead an endless process of how can you get Linux to do what the Apple OS or Windows does easily. The answer is blood, sweat and tears and you never get there.

Example. 6.1 has new WIFI security patches. But with rare exception, wireless wifi is glitchy across the board but it is now VERY SECURE. Every hour that an operating system wastes on trying to accomplish simple utility is an hour of lost productivity. Worse you are no better off for it. Time wasting is for the hobby folk not for the productive. Nothing wrong with hobbies but for the majority of humans, a computer is to increase productivity and not turn you into a bloody babysitter.

      That was stupid.

It sounds like the ranting of an 11 year old. Maybe it is.

Re: Linux remains an unmade bed

Seems Linux WiFi is stable enough that most devices I have encountered that have anything to do with WiFi implement it in Linux without issue? The majority of access points, routers, mobile phones, plus countless embedded devices? And the occasional laptops, including my daily driver work laptop.

Yes there are some WiFi adapters used on consumer laptops that are a bit flakey, but these make up a pretty tiny portion of Linux WiFi implementations.

WiFi sucks on MacOS too. I'm not going to read the whole stack of WiFi specifications, but I'm guessing there's a lot interpretation of features that result in bugs and bug dependencies. Apple likes data to sync with the beacons so people set the AP beacon rate faster to fix the horrible idle latency. That causes mobile to stay a wake and then people complain about WiFi battery drain. Many devices will cling to Morse-code speeds on a -95 dB AP when they could hop to a -40 dB AP. You can set the AP to kick off clients with weak signals to fix this...but then some clients think they're banished and won't reconnect. It never ends.

Hello, how is 1998 over there? Over here in 2022, you'll be pleased to hear we don't have these problems any more. Oh, and Linux now runs 100% of the world's supercomputers, 3+ billion smartphones and pretty much the rest of the planet too!

And still can't do plug and play Wifi. I reinstalled Fedora yesterday, and the wifi still isn't working. Tried all sorts. Gave up and and to resort to powerline.
