back to article Google Cloud to accept cryptocurrencies as payment

Google Cloud today said it will start accepting select cryptocurrencies as payment for its online services. This method will be offered first to a chosen few customers in the Web 3.0 space, according to the internet giant; it's expected that this availability will expand over time. Crypto-payment collection will be powered by …

    This will be fascinating

Most people who own cryptocurrencies are gambling on the future value, or more specifically their ability to offload them on to a greater fool, not to actually use them as currency.

So: it will be fascinating to see what fraction of a fraction of a percent of Google Cloud's revenue comes from this.

I don't think Google really care. What they have probably done is bought a bunch of random digital currencies weeks ago, hoping this announcement is going to cause a quick rise, sell them and then pretend it never happened.

That's all these nonsense coins are good for.

That doesn't make sense. The amount of money a company like Google could conceivably make from pump-and-dump schemes pales into insignificance against the money it already makes daily with little to no risk.

Arguably the same could be said for Musk but he does it for fun.

Sure and I (along with many others) don't understand his motivations.

But that says nothing about Google.

I suspect a few select customers that use cloud computing to earn large amounts crypto from various nefarious practices, will only be too happy to pay in crypto without having to launder it in to real money first.

Even more interesting is whether or not Google instantly convert them back into dollars by selling them as soon as they've received a payment.

If they hang onto them without converting back to $, their revenue accounting is going to be interesting when coin prices fluctuate. That would also increase their risk as the possibility of a collapse in value is ever present.

In reality, saying "aren't we modern we accept crypto" makes you look like a fashion victim, and not an especially wise one.

They don't need to. because Google will only receive dollars, converted from Dunningkrugerrands by Coinbase.

Yeah, as the article suggests, this looks like merely a carrot for Coinbase to move some of their usage to GCP, and a bit of a marketing wave at cryptocurrency fans. From Google's perspective it will likely be such a small drop in the bucket that any risk is negligible.

    Great news!

Now I'll be able to host all my scam/spammer/drugstore/porn/etc websites without telling anyone who I am. A great leap for mankind.

is it possible to mine the bloody things faster on Google servers then you spend them on Google servers?
