back to article AWS, Microsoft, Google own 72% of Euro customer cloud spending

Six US titans are ruling the European cloud market, with AWS, Microsoft, and Google alone accounting for almost three-quarters of customers'spending in the region. The figures from Synergy Research Group show the cloud market in Europe is five times as big as it was in early 2017 with revenues reaching €10.4 billion (c $10.9 …

They would be the big ones

They have deep pockets, they have experience with large data centres due to their core product (Google and amazon) or exploit vendor lock in (Microsoft). They sometimes have stuff that can be run on prem, but severely limit options there (Microsoft with Azure and PowerBI is what I'm most familiar with there).

There's just no way a smaller company could have matched that in the beginning, and now we are long past any hope. Unless the businesses start to realise that the Cloud Act is dangerous to them due to e.g. GDPR (and other requirements). We face these problems, we have customers with sensitive data, and one of the requirements is that we host most stuff in house. So... Yeah, this might be a niche.

There is a lot of talk about a European Cloud, Data Sovereignty. and so on. But when you actually, and I mean really seriously look how the big players are built, there is really zero chance for the like of OVH to catch up. The gaps going to keep gowing, with the US cloud providers plowering billions into hardware and software.

And for Cloud users its like crack and they are going to spend more and more with their provider. "Hmmm, I need to take a voice recording and get it back as text so I can search for things" 30 mins later using Amazon Transcribe/Google or Azure Voice to text..."Oh thats done, what else do I need to do today.

    Beyond capital expenditures

The big three also have the money to make significant software development expenditures to make their hardware run faster or cheaper or more efficiently, thus pushing them even higher in their dominance.

At this point, I can't even imagine what could break the cycle.

Tick tock, the clock is ticking.

Cloud, aka running services and virtualisimg hardware across a few data centres, is a self fulfilling prophecy.

It has made it easy for 'engineers' to 'create' new routers and firewalls and instances of applications - without, crucially, understanding what lays beneath.

In a few years when the infrastructure starts to creak and right click, new router instance doesn't work there is going to be a severe shortage of people with the required skills.

    For now let's enjoy it!

You should watch some you tube stuff from the likes of the engineers who design this stuff. James Hamilton from Amazon etc.
