Well, FFS, they would say that, wouldn't they ‽ And why on Earth wouldn't they/shouldn't they ‽ Gotta keep those old rocky horror picture shows on the road to try and justify titanic defence spending to prevent national and/or global economic collapse with mass population brainwashing via main stream media news channel manipulation and novel viral/virulent/vital programming script trialing/trailing/leaking.

Just imagine a crazily well equipped lethal psychotic army stationed at home in an out of bounds to the public and private sector training ground surrounding you with nothing to do. For you to be safe and not terrified, they'd have to invent something or someone else to terrorise or be terrified of and suggest it is a threat which needs them to plan for attack in defence of ......... well, one could say the motherland but others would point out it is just as, if not more likely to be in defence of the continued existence of their boondoggle.

I was about to write the same thing.

Also ... why would Russia conduct cyber attacks against Ukraine's critical infrastructure since they are already occupying/bombing that infrastructure for real. That doesn't make sense, and stinks of cheap propaganda to keep the money flowing.

In 2 months it's winter there, and Biden will have lost the mid-term elections, and the mood will definitively have turned in Europe (see Italy or Sweden) so better negotiate peace now then in 2 months. They have some good cards now, whether they still hold in winter is not sure.

Blighty has certainly not got its sorrows to seek in that department whenever one considers the Conservative Party's most recent monumental blunder which by all accounts today has wiped off £500BN [Five Hundred Thousand Million Pounds] from the economy in just a matter of days, and that only just the start of the pain they have inflicted upon the nation for it is both practically and virtually guaranteed to escalate a great deal further and become really depressing, isn't it, whenever intelligence to fix the problem is not forthcoming and more folk realise it is MIA/AWOL.

It's just a fantasy game, isn't it, .... politicians acting and pontificating as if they know what they should be doing, and the markets marking their homework to keep them hostage to debt and deficit they might remotely command and control.

In 2 months it's winter - and unless Russian Army logistics have significantly improved, a large proportion of the unwilling, under-trained, under-equipped conscripts being sent to the front by the Russians will have frozen to death or been hospitalised with frostbite. And by then, the ground has frozen and hardened, and mobility is restored.

Winter is likely to be Ukraine's friend.

I assume that you live in Europe, as do I. Like many of us you will have grown up in a peaceful environment, one where wars did not happen, wars were a long way away. The result will have led you to question why there was so much spending by our governments on defence - it was not needed.

Putin has shown us why this spending is needed and has been a wake up call for many (me included) to now understand that peace cannot be assumed, you need to be ready. This has happened at the country level as well, the backing of NATO has got stronger as countries have realised that without it they might be vulnerable to an aggressor.

Spending on your local fire station is a complete waste of cash ... until a house catches fire.

The only thing that a bully understands is someone who is stronger than them. The way of dealing with a school bully is to have them visited by the rugby club.

I do not like spending on the military but do understand that the consequences of not spending might be awful.

How much spending and what on ? A hard question that can only be answered with hindsight.
